PFT: NFL not saying whether Arians tampered

KaepGetty Images

Before Thursday, I hadn?t heard of David Whitley.? I now have.? And my first impression of his work isn?t good.

In a possible attempt by a pair of dying brands to regain relevance in a world with more digital options than eyeballs to consume them, Whitley has penned a so-stodgy-it?s-edgy column for the AOL/Sporting News that criticizes Colin Kaepernick?s ink.

Crafted carefully (for the most part) to avoid legitimate complaints of racism, Whitley?s implicit message arguably could be boiled down thusly:? He prefers NFL quarterbacks to be white, or to at least act white.

In the interests of clarity and fairness, Whitley didn?t say that.? But that?s the sense I got while reading his words, including:

1.? ?He is the CEO of a high-profile organization, and you don?t want your CEO to look like he just got paroled.?

2.? ?For dinosaurs like me, NFL quarterbacks were our little Dutch boys.?

3.? ?It?s not just a white thing, I hope.?

I?m not even sure what the last sentence means.? Reading the full column in one continuous chunk of words, it feels like he?s lamenting the disappearance of the good old days, when quarterbacks were not only tattoo-free but also pigment-free.

Regardless of Whitley?s conscious or subconscious motivations, Kaepernick?s parents aren?t happy that their adopted son has been compared to prison inmates.

?It annoyed me,? Teresa Kaepernick told USA Today.? ?You are categorizing this kid on something like tattoos?? Really?? Saying other guys are role models because they don?t have them?? Really?? Some of these other guys don?t have crystal clear reputations.? That?s how you?re going to define this kid?? It?s pretty irritating, but it is what it is.?

?This guy has probably never talked to Colin,? Rick Kaepernick said.? ?Instead of saying that Colin does all these great things and donates his time to children, this guy is going to make him out like a gangster.? Really??

I?m no stranger to the criticism that flows in response to opinions that reflect old-school attitudes that come, for example, from the days when the husbands smoked cigarettes and read Life magazine while watching Walter Cronkite in the waiting room as their kids were being born.? But the idea that quarterbacks shouldn?t have tattooed arms has no relevance to anything that would be remotely relevant to playing the sport of football, at any level.

Except for folks who prefer their quarterbacks to be fair-haired and fair-skinned, or at a minimum to behave as if they are.

Singaporean Government Invests in Chinese Gaming Community YY

Chinese gaming community YY has been having a good time since it debuted on the market (NASDAQ:YY) a couple weeks ago. It?s up over $13 a share now, and apparently someone in Singapore saw this coming, because the latest SEC filings reveal that the Government of Singapore Investment Corp (which is exactly what it sounds like it is) has already invested in YY to the tune of 500,000 American depository shares (ADS).

That sounds like a lot, but actually with nearly 8 million shares available publicly, it amounts to 6.4% of the company. Not exactly a controlling share, but not exactly chump change either. And since YY?s stock has been rising pretty steadily since the IPO, the Singaporean government has probably already made quite a bit of money and will be hoping the value of its shares continues to rise.

The Government of Singapore Investment Corp (GIC) was established explicitly to invest in overseas markets, so this investment shouldn?t be a huge surprise, but it?s interesting that the GIC is so confident in YY?s long-term viability despite a number of examples of other Chinese tech stocks that started strong but eventually dropped significantly (like Youku) and Chinese gaming stocks that have generally underperformed (like The9 and Shanda). It?s so far so good for YY ? and thus for the GIC ? here?s hoping the company is able to maintain its thus far strong growth.

WikiLeaks' Assange downplays health concerns

LONDON (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, holed up in London's Ecuadorian embassy for nearly six months, played down concerns about his health on Thursday, saying he enjoyed being at the centre of the legal and diplomatic storm.

Assange, 41, whose website angered the United States by releasing thousands of secret diplomatic cables, took sanctuary in Ecuador's embassy in June, jumping bail after exhausting appeals in British courts against extradition to Sweden for sexual assault allegations.

Ecuadorian officials have said the former computer hacker is suffering from a chronic lung ailment as a result of his long stay in the embassy.

Dressed in a dark suit and white shirt fastened with silver-coloured cufflinks in the shape of a 'W' and an 'L', Assange showed no outward sign of health problems.

"The confinement, the circumstances are obviously difficult," was all Assange would say when questioned about his health by Reuters.

"I rather enjoy being swept away in the storm of it all. You only live once so it's important that we do something that is meaningful with our time," he said.

He is said to be living a cramped life inside the modest diplomatic mission. He eats mostly take-out food and uses a treadmill to burn off energy and a vitamin D lamp to make up for the lack of sunlight.

The whistleblower said he has used his time at the embassy to focus on his work, including a book "Cypherpunks" in which he warns that the growing amount of personal data we store online could render society a "slave to the internet".

Speaking in a gilt-corniced conference room, accessed via an entrance hall decorated with a beaming portrait of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, Assange spoke vehemently about the dangers of cyber-surveillance by governments and private companies.

Sandy recovery claims mount: How much will a divided Congress pay?

The US may be perched on the edge of the ?fiscal cliff,? with Republicans demanding spending cuts and Democrats clamoring for tax hikes to reduce the budget deficit.

But, one thing both parties are likely to agree on: spending billions and billions of dollars to help New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and other states recover from superstorm Sandy.

Within the last two days, the governors of New York and New Jersey have released estimates that they will need a combined $79 billion ($42 billion for New York and $37 billion for New Jersey) to pay for repairs, restoration, and mitigation against future storms. Connecticut expects to send its request in shortly.

IN PICTURES: Sandy: Chronicle of an unrelenting storm

On Wednesday, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg flew to Washington for meetings just about every thirty minutes with congressional leaders. On Monday, he said the city would like an additional $9.8 billion for storm damage on top of $5.4 billion that they have already submitted to FEMA.

He probably could have saved the airfare because budget experts think Congress is likely to open up the checkbook for this disaster.

?They will pretty much get what they ask for,? says Stan Collender, a budget authority and a partner at Qorvis Communications in Washington.

?Historically, Congress has been quite generous when there are disasters,? says Pete Davis of Davis Capital Investment Ideas in Washington, which advises Wall Street clients. ?It won?t be in the lame duck session, it will be next year.?

The money will likely come in the form of an emergency supplemental spending bill that will go through Congress once it resolves its current differences over spending and taxes. ?If it weren?t for the fiscal cliff this would get done really quickly,? says Mr. Davis.

But, won?t spending another $80 billion to $100 billion throw those calculations out of line?

?It will expand the deficit,? agrees Mr. Collender. But, that is not likely to matter, he and others say.

?Traditionally, supplemental spending bills are not paid for,? explains Davis. For example, the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have been funded by supplemental spending bills.

One of the reasons Congress is so generous is that every senator and representative is keenly aware that a disaster can take place in their district at any time. In the West, wildfires can destroy communities. In the Midwest a drought can hurt farmers. Along the Gulf Coast, there could be another big oil spill.

The governors seeking federal money can also point to how generous Congress was after Hurricane Katrina ripped through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama in 2005.

?In the past decade Congress has authorized supplemental appropriations after hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes, including $120 billion worth of aid in several bills passed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,? wrote Bloomberg in his letter requesting Federal aid on Monday.

In fact, the Gulf Coast delegation and the Army Corps of Engineers kept coming back to Congress for more and more money, recalls D.J. Nordquist, who was working at the office of the federal coordinator for Gulf Coast rebuilding at the time.

The comparison is not lost on the Northeast governors. In his request for funding, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo compared the damage done by Sandy and Katrina. In the three categories he picked, housing, power outages, and businesses impacted, Sandy was more significant.

As Ms. Nordquist notes, politicians have been known to exaggerate before. She recalls that Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu asked for $250 billion to start with. ?Her strategy was to ask for something astronomical,? she recalls.

In the case of Sandy, the numbers are also ticking upward very quickly. On Friday, Nov. 23, Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey asked for $29 billion. On Wednesday he revised the number to $37 billion to cover measures to protect the state from future disasters.

In Christie?s request for aid, he added that he might still need more money. ?The estimate will likely be refined further to consider and include the long-term impact on the next tourism season, shifts in population, impact on real estate values, and other factors,? he said in a letter to Congress.

Governor Cuomo also wants a large amount of money to prevent future damage. He?s asked for $9.1 billion for what he termed ?common sense? mitigation and prevention costs such as flood protection for the World Trade center site and the subway system.

Bloomberg?s strategy on Wednesday was to try to make support for shelling out the money a nonpartisan issue. He met with deficit hawks such as Rep. Eric Cantor (R) of Virginia and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R) of Kentucky and with Democratic leaders including Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California and Senate majority leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

?Now, we have to bring together both sides in Washington ? and both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue,? he said at a press conference late in the day Wednesday. ?Hurricane recovery is not a partisan issue.?

Saudi king seen on TV amid health questions

(AP) ? Saudi state television has broadcast the first public images of King Abdullah since the 87-year-old monarch underwent what was described as back surgery 11 days ago.

The video shows the king sitting down, as members of the royal family greet him and kiss his hand in a hospital suite in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

The Wednesday broadcast appeared aimed at quieting speculation about the overall health of Abdullah, a key U.S. ally in the region. The official Saudi Press Agency says the top-level delegation was "reassured" about Abdullah's recovery.

The king underwent more than 10 hours of surgery Nov. 17 for what officials said was a procedure to secure a loose vertebra.

The king had back operations in 2010 and twice in 2011.

Hamas is no winner in the Gaza ceasefire with Israel

Hamas has claimed total victory in the ceasefire with Israel. Sure,?Hamas evaded a punishing Israeli ground assault in Gaza and gained some diplomatic support and recognition.?But in the long run, Hamas is sowing the seeds for its own destruction.

By Jonathan Adelman / November 27, 2012

Palestinian school children walk Nov. 26 in the rubble left after an Israeli strike destroyed the Hamas interior ministry in Gaza City. Op-ed contributor Jonathan Adelman writes: Hamas cannot become 'a viable and recognized state unless it moves away from the alluring, but ultimately empty, confrontations with Israel. These confrontations only leave it more impoverished and keep it from taking the road to peace and global integration.'

Adel Hana/AP

The Hamas leadership has claimed total victory in the truce that started the day before Thanksgiving after eight days of brutal warfare with Israel. And on the surface, this seems to make sense.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Hamas evaded a punishing Israeli ground assault; gained diplomatic support from a new Egypt, and Saudi Arabia and Qatar; maintained its ties to Iran; developed an indirect relationship with the United States; triumphed in the Palestinian world over the ineffective leader of the West Bank, Mahmoud Abbas, and proclaimed a sense of legitimacy from standing up to Israel.

And yet, in the longer run, this ?victory? will likely turn bitter and holds the seeds for its own destruction.

While Hamas, touting its martyrdom and survival in the war, claims victory, nearly all such terrorist victories are ultimately oxymorons. Militarily, Hamas, despite launching more than 1,500 rockets at Israel and occasionally reaching Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, was almost totally routed on the battlefield. Its rocketry killed six Israelis and wounded about 240 others and failed to destroy any Israeli military or civilian facility.

Instead, Israel, with the newly developed Iron Dome missile defense system, destroyed 84 percent of the incoming Hamas rockets likely to cause damage. The Israeli Air Force, Navy, and Artillery Corps hit more than 1,500 targets with overwhelmingly pinpoint precision, 10 times more than they took out in Operation Cast Lead four years ago.

Economically, the Israelis with their precise and massive strikes inflicted billions of dollars of damage on Hamas-related facilities. By contrast, Hamas evidently inflicted only slight damage on Israeli facilities. Politically, after the first bloom of the ?victory? rapidly fades away, the bulk of Gazans are sure to be angry over the almost total failure again of their government to protect them from mass devastation, the deaths of at least 160? people, or even provide concrete bomb shelters or air raid sirens to warn of attack. This contrasts vividly with Israeli sirens and shelters.

Diplomatically, Hamas in the short term looks sure to gain. But its association with Iran still remains less than tight, especially with Hamas?s denunciation of Syria (Iran?s only major Arab ally).

Too, the arrival of several Arab and Middle Eastern diplomats in Gaza to show support for the Palestinian cause may prove less than it seems on the surface for Hamas. Turkey will have to walk back much of its lashing out at Israel as a ?terrorist state? guilty of war crimes if it wishes to remain in good standing in NATO and keep the bulk of its trade with the West.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar, while sympathetic to Hamas, have more serious concerns ? mainly the growing power of an Iran that loathes them and is rapidly closing in on nuclear weapons. Egypt, despite the common Muslim Brotherhood tie with Hamas, desperately needs billions of dollars of American and Western aid that would be jeopardized if Egypt swung fully behind the militant Hamas. ?

At the end of the day, a government or entity that wants to survive must meet its people?s psychological and tangible needs. The Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, even when combined with the more prosperous West Bank, still ranks as only 173 in the world in gross domestic product and 166 in exports. It cannot meet its people?s expectations of becoming a viable and recognized state unless it moves away from the alluring, but ultimately empty, confrontations with Israel. These confrontations only leave it more impoverished and keep it from taking the road to peace and global integration.

These ?victories? will ultimately turn to ashes as Israel grows economically and militarily stronger and Hamas ever weaker.

Star Trek Into Darkness Synopsis Posted

star-trek-2-into-the-darkness-zachary-quinto-image-slice

J.J. Abrams is very good at keeping his plots a secret, and only revealing information when he chooses. ?He?s done a terrific job keeping his cards close to the vest for Star Trek Into Darkness, but as we count down to the reveal of the first trailer and first nine minutes of the movie (the latter being shown in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in IMAX 3D), the official synopsis has been announced.

Hit the jump for the synopsis.? The film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke,?and?Benedict Cumberbatch.? Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D and IMAX 3D on May 17, 2013.

Here?s the official synopsis for Star Trek Into Darkness:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ?Star Trek Into Darkness.?

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Reading the synopsis, it sounds like a damn good picture.? We still don?t know the name of the villain, but we now know that Captain Kirk is out for revenge and on a mission to track down a ?one man weapon of mass destruction.?? The synopsis also mentions that there?s ?an unstoppable force of terror within their own organization?, so I?m left to wonder if that?s why Cumberbatch?s character has the faint outline of a Starfleet insignia on his chest in these set photos.

Whooping cough immunity may wane after vaccination: study

(Reuters Health) - Unvaccinated youngsters were nine times more likely to contract whooping cough during a recent outbreak in California than those who had received the entire five-shot series, researchers found.

However, the effectiveness of the vaccine waned as more time elapsed since a child's final dose of the so-called DTaP vaccine for whooping cough, also known as pertussis.

"Pertussis vaccines are still our best tool to prevent pertussis," said Lara Misegades, the lead researcher on the study at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). But the study, she said, "reinforces the importance of getting the adolescent DTaP booster."

A DTaP booster was recently added to the vaccine schedule for 11-to-12-year-olds, on top of the five doses traditionally given between the ages of 2 months and 6 years. The combination vaccine also protects against diphtheria and tetanus.

During the 2010 whooping cough outbreak in California, more than 9,000 cases were reported and 10 infants died, the researchers wrote on Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The new study included 682 children aged 4 to 10 in California with whooping cough and another 2,016 children who never came down with the disease.

According to their medical records and immunization registries, 7.8 percent of the kids who developed whooping cough had not received any DTaP vaccines, compared with 0.9 percent of their pertussis-free peers.

Children who recently had finished their vaccine series were the least likely to become infected. Just 2.8 percent of kids who became ill had received their fifth DTaP dose in the past year, compared with 17.6 percent of those who did not come down with whooping cough.

And with each year that passed since a child's last vaccine dose, the odds of that child developing pertussis rose.

"The message should clearly not be, ?Don't get the vaccine because it doesn't work,'" said Dr Eugene Shapiro, a pediatrician and infectious diseases researcher from the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.

"It works, but we need to continue to work to improve it," said Shapiro, who wrote an editorial accompanying the new study. "The problem is we don't really know what should be done."

He said one strategy might be to give an earlier DTaP booster dose, or to consider a different type of pertussis vaccine. Each of those ideas, however, will require more research.

To prevent the most serious whooping cough cases including deaths, both researchers emphasized the importance of vaccinating pregnant women and anyone living with an infant. Babies are the most likely to become seriously ill in a whooping cough outbreak, and "cocooning" could prevent them from being exposed in the first place.

Misegades said the CDC also recommends catch-up vaccination for everyone who has not received the entire DTaP series. Whooping cough cases for this year have already topped 36,000 in the United States, she added.

Windows 8 sells 40 million licenses in a month meanwhile, mum's the word on Surface sales

It took just four days for Windows 8 to hit four million machines (ours included), and in just over a month, Microsoft has managed to sell some 40 million licenses of its tiled OS. To date, Windows 8 is outpacing Windows 7 in terms of upgrades, but given that the company had moved 600 million copies of the latter back in June, the new kid on the software block still has quite a ways to go. The news comes just hours after Microsoft also announced that it had sold a whopping 750,000 Xbox 360 consoles during the Black Friday weekend, which makes the omission of one other number that much more glaring -- after all, if it's so easy to dig up Xbox and Windows 8 numbers, why are we left with awkward adjectives to describe Surface sales?

Sina Weibo Challenges LinkedIn With a New Social Network

Chinese Internet giant Sina is hoping to expand its microblogging service, called Weibo, through a new business orientated social network that resembles LinkedIn.

The new direction for Weibo, spotted by Tech In Asia, is in beta at the moment and can only be accessed via an email invite.

It?s called ?Wei Renmai? ? which roughly translates to ?Weibo Connections? ? and looks at first glance like a slightly different spin on the company?s original product. It still offers many of the microblogging service?s hallmark features, such as the ability to follow other users, add them to circles and republish other status updates. However, it also has a new search engine located at the top of the page, which can be used for business orientated tasks such as searching for ?people?, ?companies? or ?opportunities?.

The following screenshot taken by Tech2IPO shows what a profile page on Wei Renmai looks like:

sina weibo crop 520x495 Sina Weibo challenges LinkedIn with its own business focused social network

One interesting feature is a map that shows two Weibo friends what business contacts they share, as well as how they are connected to one another. The concept sounds remarkably similar to the connections concept on LinkedIn, which often shows how you might know someone through other acquaintances.

The launch of Wei Renmai puts Sina in direct competition with LinkedIn, who is already looking at creating a local site aimed at Chinese companies and professionals. LinkedIn is currently fending off Vidaeo, which hit 45 million registered users earlier this year, as well as other professional networks operating in China, such as Tianji and Ushi.

Earlier this month, Sina passed 400 million registered accounts on its Weibo network. While that may sound like a lot, the company has admitted that it is under mounting pressure from its rivals such as WeChat, a messaging app created by Tencent. As a result, the amount of time that users are spending on Weibo is currently in decline.

Sina is now looking at how it can monetize Weibo. The company is already exploring a promoted feed feature that will allow small and medium-sized businesses, as well as regular users, to pay for in-feed advertisements. Perhaps Wei Renmai, if it attracts enough Weibo users, will be the firm?s next big source of revenue.

Ryan teamed with Julio Jones on an 80-yard TD midway through the third quarter, but the NFC South leaders found themselves trailing 23-17 after the Bucs marched for a touchdown, then forced a fumble by Ryan to set up a field goal that put the Falcons in catchup mode with 10 minutes to go.

Michael Turner's 3-yard TD run put Atlanta ahead for good with 7:55 left. Connor Barth missed a 56-yard goal for Tampa Bay (6-5) in the closing minutes, and the Bucs' four-game winning streak ended when Josh Freeman's desperation pass fell incomplete in the end zone with no time remaining.

The win enabled the Falcons (10-1) to keep pace with Houston for the NFL's best record. Turner also scored a fourth-quarter TD that helped the Falcons overcome six turnovers to beat Arizona 23-19 last week.

Doug Martin scored on a pair of 1-yard run for the Bucs, however the rookie who began the day leading the NFL in total yards from scrimmage was limited to 50 yards rushing on 21 carries.

Barth kicked field goals of 22, 42, and 48 yards, the latter giving the Bucs their six-point lead after cornerback E.J. Biggers sacked Ryan to force a fumble. Ryan threw a second-quarter interception ? his sixth pick in two weeks ? that led to Barth's field goal that made it 10-10 at the half.

Ryan completed 26 of 32 passes, including four straight on the drive that Turner finished with his TD run. Jacquizz Rodgers had a 5-yard TD run in the first quarter, and Jones finished with six receptions for 147 yards despite playing on a sore right ankle that limited him in practice.

Ryan started the game with 10 straight completions before Ronde Barber's interception and 28-yard return to the Atlanta 31 led to Barth's first field goal.

The Falcons drove to the Tampa Bay 4 in the closing seconds of the half, but wasted an opportunity to regain the lead when Matt Bryant hooked a 22-yard field-goal attempt wide left as time expired. The Atlanta kicker missed a 48-yarder with 8 seconds left, giving the Bucs one more chance to pull out what would have been their first signature victory under first-year coach Greg Schiano.

Atlanta struck quickly after Barth's second field goal put Tampa Bay up 13-10. Ryan found Jones racing up the right sideline, and the receiver broke free from cornerback Leonard Johnson to continue into the end zone. The Bucs regained the lead when Martin scored his second TD on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Freeman finished 19 of 30 for 256 yards. Vincent Jackson had five catches for 96 yards.

Atlanta converted six of eight first downs and outgained the Bucs 239 yards to 105 in the opening half, yet it was 10-10 at the break because the Falcons settled for a field goal after holding the ball for more than seven minutes of its first scoring drive, Ryan's interception and Bryant's missed field goal.

Ig Nobel Prizes Celebrate Somewhat Suspect Science

The Ig Nobel Prizes honor scientific research that, in the words of Master of Ceremonies Marc Abrahams, "first makes you laugh, and then makes you think." This year's prizes, awarded in late September, include citations for research into mysteriously green hair, potentially explosive colonoscopies, and the creation of equations that model the back-and-forth swing of a ponytail in motion.

Massive pileup shuts I-10 in Texas; 2 dead

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) ? Two people died and more than 80 people were hurt Thursday when at least 100 vehicles collided in Southeast Texas in a pileup that left trucks twisted on top of each other and authorities rushing to pull survivors from the wreckage.

The collision occurred in extremely foggy conditions at about 8:45 a.m. Thanksgiving Day on Interstate 10 southwest of Beaumont, a Gulf Coast city about 80 miles east of Houston.

A man and a woman were killed in a Chevy Suburban SUV crushed by a tractor trailer, the Texas Department of Public Safety told KFDM-TV.

Officials at Acadian Ambulance service said at least 51 people have been taken to area hospitals and at least eight are critically hurt.

According to DPS, a crash on the eastbound side of the highway led to other accidents in a dangerous chain reaction. There were multiple crashes on the other side of the highway as well.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rod Carroll told The Associated Press the fog was so thick that deputies didn't immediately realize they were dealing with multiple accidents.

"It is catastrophic," Carroll said. "I've got cars on top of cars."

I-10's eastbound lanes were re-opened Thursday evening after more than eight hours.

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis told KFDM that two people in an SUV died after the crash. She said at least 100 cars and trucks were involved in the accident.

Carroll said uninjured drivers tried to help as authorities sorted through the wreckage.

"It's just people helping people," Carroll said. "The foremost thing in this holiday season is how other travelers were helping us when we were overwhelmed, sitting and holding, putting pressure on people that were injured."

Eating right key to survival of whales and dolphins

Thursday, November 22, 2012

In the marine world, high-energy prey make for high-energy predators. And to survive, such marine predators need to sustain the right kind of high-energy diet. Not just any prey will do, suggests a new study by researchers from the University of British Columbia and University of La Rochelle, in France.

Published today in the online journal PLOS ONE, the study is the first to show that the survival of whales and dolphins depends on the quality of their diets and this plays an important role in conservation.

"The conventional wisdom is that marine mammals can eat anything," says co-author Andrew Trites, a marine mammal expert at UBC. "However, we found that some species of whales and dolphins require calorie rich diets to survive while others are built to live off low quality prey?and it has nothing to do with how big they are."

The team compared the diets of 11 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, and found differences in the qualities of prey consumed that could not be explained by the different body sizes of the predators. The key to understanding the differences in their diets was to look at their muscle performance.

"High energy prey tend to be more mobile, and require their predators to spend more energy to catch them," says Trites. "The two have co-evolved."

J?r?me Spitz, the study's first author, says the research will help better assess the impact of resource changes to marine mammals.

"Species with high energy needs are more sensitive to depletion of their primary prey," says Spitz, a post-doctoral fellow at ULR in France, who completed the research while a visiting scholar at UBC. "It is no longer a question of how much food do whales and dolphins need, but whether they are able to get the right kinds of food to survive."

Efficacy of supervised Tai Chi exercises versus conventional physical therapy exercises in fall prevention for frail older adults: a randomized controlled trial.

Disabil Rehabil. 2012 Nov 20;

Authors: Tousignant M, Corriveau H, Roy PM, Desrosiers J, Dubuc N, H?bert R

Abstract
Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of supervised Tai Chi exercises versus the conventional physical therapy exercises in a personalized rehabilitation program in terms of the incidence and severity of falls in a frail older population. Method: The participants were frail older adults living in the community, admitted to the day hospital program in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada (n = 152). They were randomized to receive a 15-week intervention, either by supervised Tai Chi exercises (n = 76) or conventional physical therapy (n = 76). Fall incidence and severity were assessed using both the calendar technique and phone interviews once a month during 12 months following the end of the intervention. Other variables were collected at baseline to compare the two groups: age, comorbidity, balance, sensory interaction on balance, and self-rated health. Results: Both interventions demonstrated a protective effect on falls but Tai Chi showed a greater one (RR = 0.74; 95% CI = 0.56-0.98) as compared to conventional physical therapy exercises. Conclusions: Supervised Tai Chi exercises as part of a rehabilitation program seem to be a more effective alternative to the conventional physical therapy exercises for this specific population. Xanana Threatens to Starve Youth Engaging in Criminal Conduct ...

ETLJB 21 November 2012 - According to a report in Jornal Independente on 20 November 2012, the Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, as Defence and Security Minister, said that he will not tolerate? young people who intend to create instability in the country when the United Nations mission finishes its mandate in December this year.

Xanana told the youth not to attack each other with stones. ?If you attack each other with stones, I will order that you be arrested and that you not be fed while you are in custody,? the Prime Minister is reported to have said to journalists at the Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili on 19 November last after returning from his overseas visit .

Speaking as the Minister for Defence and Security, he said that he did not fear being condemned for violating their human rights by ordering that those who involve themselves in problems such as assaulting or stoning each other not be fed whilst being held in custody.

?I, Xanana, speaking as the Minister for Defence and Security, say that whoever makes trouble, I will order the police to arrest you, then afterwards you can scream about your human rights being violated and take me to the International Court,? Xanana is reported to have said.

Xanana said that he too had heard information that some groups intended to create instability in the country after the UNMIT mission has finished.

?I say, whoever is so hard headed, we will put human rights aside then we can resolve the problem. I will do this because I am thinking about your future, I am thinking of the future of the nation,? Xanana affirmed.

In the meantime the PNTL Operations commander Superintendent Armando Monteiro said that the PNTL is currently in full operations throughout the country to anticipate any possibility of instability in the country.

But the Police Commander, Commissioner Longuinhos Monteiro has also appealed to all local residents? not to panic about rumours that people dressed as ninjas will cause security problems when the UN leaves.

Suara Timor Lorosae reported yesterday that the Commissioner said that the local authorities needed to have a dialog with communities to discuss these widespread rumours that are causing fear in the population.

He called on the local authorities to cooperate with the police in order to transmit factual information to the people.

Alessio Sakara planning appeal of DQ loss

Saturday's UFC 154 bout between Alessio Sakara and Patrick Cote ended in controversy as Sakara was disqualified by referee Dan Miragliotta for throwing illegal blows to the back of Cote's head. UFC president Dana White said Miragliotta did a "horrible job" because he allowed Cote to take too many hits and called the fight a DQ and not a no contest. However, Miragliotta told Yahoo! Sports on Saturday that the commission in Montreal told him the fight had to end in a disqualification, not a no contest.

Miragliotta also explained what constitutes an illegal blow to MMA Junkie:

"Even though most of your hand is hitting the back of the head, if your pinkie knuckle is hitting him in the ear, it's a legal shot," said Miragliotta. "Maybe that's what people don't understand. They said, 'Oh, it's the back of the head.' It is the back of the head, but it's hitting him in the ear.

But Sakara's manager denies that Miragliotta warned Sakara, as Miragliotta said he did. He also says he didn't see the blows to the back of the head. Luckily, we have the magic of photography to see.

This one, from Yahoo! Sports photographer Tracy Lee, shows Sakara's hand brushing Cote's ear.

This angle shows a clear blow to the back of the head, though. Shot from above the top of the cage, there is no impediment in showing where Sakara was hitting Cote. Sakara's camp is planning to appeal the ruling. Meanwhile, White already said a rematch between the two will happen.

BMW's Green Presence In L.A. | Hybrid Cars

Published November 20, 2012

By Philippe Crowe

BMW_i8_Roadster

BMW is ramping up to have a strong green presence at the Los Angeles International Auto Show which begins at the end of this month.

As expected, the striking BMW i8 Concept will be there. With a total powertrain output of 354 horsepower, zero-to-60 mph in 4.6 seconds and a very unique style, BMW expects the BMW i8 Concept Roadster to stun the city of Los Angeles.

The BMW i8 Concept Roadster is seen by BMW as a car with genuine sports car performance, yet offering an estimated 78 mpg (in the U.S.), better than most would expect from a small economy car.

The BMW i8 Concept Roadster is a plug-in hybrid vehicle powered by a high-performance drivetrain combining electric motor and gasoline combustion engine.

BMW said ?there will be more BMW i news at the show.? This has led many to believe the i4 will finally see the light. We will keep you posted.

Also part of the green side of BMW presence, but closer to production, are the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and ActiveHybrid 5.

The 300 horsepower inline-6 engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 (starting at $50,195 including Destination & Handling) and ActiveHybrid 5 ($61,995 including Destination & Handling) is the same engine renowned for its free-revving capability, pulling power and efficiency in the BMW 335i and 535i.

ActiveHybrid3

The electric motor it is combined to, meanwhile, develops 55 horsepower and is supplied energy by a high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated underneath the luggage area. Power is transferred to the rear wheels by BMW?s eight-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to full-hybrid design, which enables purely-electric and therefore local emissions-free driving in urban conditions or while coasting, BMW says the ActiveHybrid 3 and ActiveHybrid 5 boast significant improvements in fuel efficiency.

Charging of the high-performance battery primarily takes place during coasting or braking, the electric motor performing the role of a generator feeding energy into the high-voltage battery.

By contrast, under acceleration the electric motor takes on a boost function. In this case, it assists the gasoline engine with a burst of power. While coasting at speeds of up to 100 mph in ECO PRO mode, the combustion engine may be switched off and fully decoupled.

To avoid periods with the engine running at idle at intersections or in traffic jams, the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 deploys its hybrid start-stop function.

BMW says the power electronics can be linked up with BMW?s latest navigation system (optional on the ActiveHybrid 3). This allows for proactive analysis of the driving situation, enabling the drive components to be primed to deliver maximum efficiency (the effect may vary according to the quality of the available navigation data).

Leak suggests there's meat between Windows Phone 7.8 and 8

Owners of older Windows Phones who expect to run out of railroad after 7.8 could actually have some cause for hope -- meager though it may be. A leaked slide, said to originate from a 25-page Nokia roadmap sent to WParea by an anonymous tipster, points toward at least one more update after Windows Phone 7.8 lands.
