Hunt for superbugs in Australian animals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? University of Adelaide scientists will lead a national research effort to hunt for so-called 'superbugs' in Australian livestock and pets.

The University's School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, based at the Roseworthy Campus, has received $110,000 in funding from Pfizer Animal Health Australia to conduct a pilot study, which is the first of its kind for the nation.

Scientists in the new Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Roseworthy will research the prevalence of resistance to all major classes of antibiotic for two key groups of pathogens, Escherichia coli and staphylococci, in livestock animals and pets.

"Australia currently has no coordinated national program monitoring antibiotic resistance in livestock or companion animal pathogens," says the Director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Dr Darren Trott.

"Resistance in these key pathogens is a major driver throughout the world of the use of antimicrobial drugs for livestock and companion animals."

Dr Trott says Australia has some of the world's most conservative restrictions regarding the use of antimicrobial drugs in livestock.

"Australian producers do not use broad-spectrum antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones or gentamicin in livestock production, and usage of the antibiotic ceftiofur is governed by strict label requirements. However, our country is increasingly importing fresh food from countries where these antimicrobial drugs are used indiscriminately in both animals and humans.

"Australia's primary producers are under great pressure, having to compete with cheap imported products that are often of inferior quality," he says.

Dr Trott says the new study hopes to provide a clearer picture of the state of Australian livestock in particular.

"We're currently establishing a network of university-based, private and government veterinary microbiology laboratories throughout Australia that can supply us with the bacteria isolated from animal infections. These will give us a good indication of how prevalent antibiotic resistance is in our animal populations.

"We expect our study will confirm that Australia has low rates of resistance to important classes of drug in these key animal pathogens, relative to other countries, which will be good news for our exporters," he says.

"If we identify any hot pockets of emerging resistance, mitigation strategies can be implemented quickly.

"Over the next few years, we hope our data will positively influence the prescribing practices of veterinarians in the field, whether they are involved in livestock, companion animals, or both. Pfizer Australia has shown leadership in commencing the program and establishing the network. Further government research funding would be required to keep the surveillance ongoing," Dr Trott says.

This DIY Luggage Speaker Set Takes the Party with YouThis DIY Luggage Speaker Set Takes the Party with You You could spend a ton of money on a portable speaker system if you want to take your audio with you when you head to a party or backyard barbeque, or you could roll up your sleeves, grab an old suitcase from a thrift store, and get your DIY on and get similar results.

Instructables user jm31181 decided that he didn't want to pay for an expensive Boomcase, so he made his own on the cheap. A few parts, some gently used speakers and a suitcase, and the right power components, and you can see the results in the video above.

The luggage speaker can connect to any audio device, which makes it perfect for a backyard party (as long as you have power) where everyone wants to play the music they have on their phones, and best of all he did it with mostly used parts. The next step? He wants to add a battery so you don't need to find an outlet to rock out.

John Birch Society protests Belfast's ... - Bangor Daily News

BELFAST, Maine ? The lunchtime crowd walking downtown on Wednesday may have wondered what ICLEI is and why it needed to be kicked out of town, as banners held on all four corners of the intersection of Main and High streets urged be done.

Protesters from the John Birch Society, a conservative group formed in 1958 to push for limited government and personal freedoms, said that the city was a member of the International Council on Local Environmental Initiatives. That group advocates for municipal policies that reduce energy consumption and mitigate climate change.

The John Birch Society protesters ? about a dozen in all ? also drew a connection between ICLEI and the United Nations? Agenda 21, a land-use planning initiative.

But it turns out the city is not a member of ICLEI.

A city committee, the Belfast Climate and Energy Committee, joined ICLEI and paid the $600 annual dues a few years ago to get information about how to reduce energy consumption in municipal buildings and promote similar strategies for residences and businesses, Belfast Assistant Planner James Francomano said Wednesday.

Roger Lee, a three-term city councilor seeking a fourth term, was a member of that committee and said Wednesday it is essentially defunct. The city stopped paying dues to ICLEI in 2010, but the organization?s website still lists Belfast as a member.

Hal Shurtleff of Boston, a regional field director of the John Birch Society who was among the protesters, said he concluded that Belfast was a member by reviewing ICLEI?s website. Wednesday?s protest was still valid, he said after the banners were taken down, because ICLEI is part of a larger effort to limit personal freedom.

?ICLEI is one tentacle? of other, larger efforts to impose limits on personal freedom, he said.

Two women holding the banners joined Shurtleff in denouncing ICLEI, saying the organization wanted to prevent people from purchasing certain kinds of vehicles and ending single residences because of their impact on climate change. Shurtleff said climate change was a myth.

Shurtleff is scheduled to present information about Agenda 21 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Belfast Free Library.

City officials contacted ICLEI Wednesday to ask that Belfast be removed from the list of members.

Lee expressed dismay that ICLEI was cast as a villain.

?They?re a perfectly fine organization. They?re assisting municipalities all over the world,? he said.

Membership allowed the committee to receive software to estimate how energy use might be cut in municipal buildings. Committee members also were able to attend regional meetings to learn what other towns and cities were doing on the energy-efficiency front, Lee said.

?It?s pretty small-scale stuff,? he said. ICLEI does have ?a particular regimen they want you to follow. Our committee never did that.?

The city has improved energy efficiency at City Hall, and plans to do the same at the police station, the Belfast Free Library and the Boat House, Lee said.

A handout given to pedestrians on Wednesday featuring Shurtleff?s photo and biography noted that ? Agenda 21 will require a profound reorientation of all human society, unlike anything the world has ever experienced.?

During the protest, Shurtleff said planning and environmental initiatives conflicted with the personal liberty protections of the U.S. Constitution.

Lee remained perplexed.

?It?s hard to even understand [the protesters?] position,? Lee said. ?Apparently there?s something wrong with trying to live sustainably.?

Season over for Browns LB Scott Fujita

BEREA, Ohio (AP) ? Browns starting linebacker Scott Fujita will be placed on injured reserve with a neck injury, ending his stormy season ? and perhaps his football career.

Fujita, one four players suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for his role in the New Orleans Saints' bounty scandal, was inactive the past two games. He last started on Oct. 7 in a game against the New York Giants.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur spoke with Fujita on Wednesday before practice. Shurmur does not know if Fujita, an 11-year veteran and one of the league's most informed players, will retire.

The 33-year-old Fujita had neck surgery in college.

Fujita's season has been marred by injuries and the suspension. He always maintained his innocence from the pay-for-hits program and Goodell recently reduced his three-game suspension to one. However, Fujita was angered by a letter he received from the commissioner and harshly criticized Goodell for "abuse of power" in handling the Saints' situation. Fujita also questioned the commissioner's track record on player safety.

It's not yet known if Fujita will continue to fight to clear his name.

Fujita signed with the Browns as a free agent in 2010 after spending four seasons with the Saints. He played just 23 of a possible 39 games with the Browns because of injuries.

He's highly respected in the locker room and on the field, and the Browns will miss Fujita's leadership. However, Fujita was not part of Cleveland's long-term plans as the team has been immersed in a youth movement this season.

With Fujita sidelined, rookie James-Michael Johnson will likely start at strongside linebacker on Sunday against San Diego. Johnson has started Cleveland's past two games, recording three tackles.

Shurmur said losing Fujita's savvy hurts, and that Johnson and rookie L.J. Fort will need to step up.

"Just from a roster standpoint, we got younger guys playing those positions and when you got a guy who has experience there's things that he can add to the mix," Shurmur said. "On the other side of it some of the youth and enthusiasm and fresher legs add another little dimension."

The East valley is comprised of Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Ahwatukee, Apache Junction, Sun Lakes, Apache Junction, Queen Creek, San Tan Valley. The West valley is home to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Glendale, Goodyear, Laveen, Avondale, Peoria, Surprise, Sun City, Buckeye, Cave Creek and Carefree and Fountain Hills. All the cities have their own unique features and amenities. Age restricted communities are peppered throughout the valley creating a healthy mix and diversity of central Arizona real estate choices.

The major metropolitan area lies in the West valley, whereas the East valley was predominantly farmland converted to homes by urban sprawl over the years. Values in the Greater Phoenix metro area have a long history of rising and falling real estate values. When to buy in Arizona is a personal decision and watching the trends and cycles can give a good indicator of where we are headed. With a traditional sale it is listed until it is sold and sometimes the price is reduced. With the HUD it is listed for a specific time frame, for example, let?s say fifteen days. After the fifteen days have passed, they gather the bids and either accept the high bid or keep it listed and wait for more. There are a few tricks and techniques in dealing with HUD homes, so let RCP assist you in your Scottsdale Arizona HUD homes search.

106 Years After 'The Jungle', Squalid Factories ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

By Nicole Goodkind

Foodborne illnesses kill 3,000 Americans each year. Nearly 130,000 more are hospitalized. The aggregate cost of foodborne illnesses to the U.S. economy in 2011 was $77.7 billion.

These are staggering numbers, and they're on the rise. The FDA had 37 recalls of fruits and vegetables in 2011, up from just two in 2005. Between 2006 and 2010 the rate of foodborne salmonella rose 10%.

Why is food in the United States so riddled with disease that it's killing citizens?

Stephanie Armour, Food Safety and Public Health Reporter at Bloomberg, investigated this question for a special report in this month's issue of Bloomberg Markets. What she found was deeply disturbing.

The Food and Drug Administration has an annual budget of $1 billion to fulfill its duties. Annual food sales in the United States equal $1.2 trillion.

Because of these budget constraints, the FDA is able to inspect ust 6% of domestic food producers and 0.4% of importers.

"The FDA doesn't really have the funding to do the inspections," says Armour in an interview with The Daily Ticker. "I mean it's a negligible amount that they're actually able to get to and look at visually. Instead a lot of private companies have used these third-party auditors. They're basically private inspection firms that go in, do the inspection, make sure the food handling is safe and let the companies know and give them a grade."

Unfortunately, these third-party auditors are far from ideal inspectors. They are not required to follow any federal standards and do not have to make their reports public. Some are financially linked to the companies they are inspecting.

"In some cases you have companies that are on the board of the inspecting companies that are writing the rules for food safety," explains Armour.

Third-party auditors only inspect areas that companies ask them to look at. Sometimes they do not see a factory before giving it a passing grade. Food that is imported into the U.S. often goes uninspected altogether.

These improper inspections kill people, says Armour.

"People have died after these food safety inspection firms have gone in and said 'everything's great.' They've given them superior scores and weeks later or even at the same time people have started getting sick and dying."

What is found to be acceptable by these inspectors is appalling. Plants that receive superior scores are often later found by the FDA to be packed with mold, cockroaches, rats and pigeons.

Abroad, it is not an uncommon practice for workers to defecate in fields where fruit grows.

In Vietnam fish are packed in contaminated tap water for their trip to the U.S. Fish in China are fed a diet of pig and goose feces before they are sent for American consumption.

So what can we do to protect ourselves?

On a personal level, meat should always be cooked properly and fruits and vegetables should always be washed thoroughly, Armour says.

On a federal level, the FDA is hoping to receive more funding through the recently passed Food Modernization Act. Many food experts say these regulations are long overdue.

Armour, however, remains confident that the FDA can boost inspections.

"There have been some members of Congress who are trying to put some pressure on, to try to get there regulations out so that changes can start to be made," she says.

What do you make of food regulation in the U.S.? Have you changed the way you eat?

Deinstitutionalization: Unfinished Business ... - Disabled World

Disability Information Types of Disability Psychological Disorders

Information provided by National Council on Disability - Published: 2012-10-23

On Tuesday, October 23, the National Council on Disability (NCD), an independent federal agency, released its latest policy project "Deinstitutionalization: Unfinished Business" which includes an online toolkit and companion paper to provide advocates and policymakers with the tools they need to facilitate closures of state-run institutions and meet the needs of people with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities as they transition into the community.

The toolkit and accompanying paper acknowledges numerous federal and state reforms that have occurred since June 22, 1999 when the United States Supreme Court ruled in the landmark Olmstead decision that the unjustified institutional isolation of people with disabilities is unlawful discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.

With the launch of the of "Deinstitutionalization: Unfinished Business" online toolkit and companion paper, NCD seeks to provide advocates and policymakers with information they need to develop a workable plan for closing institutions, strategies for implementing the plan, and tips to debunk myths and counter arguments that have been used against closing institutions, in order to support Americans with disabilities and their families in the quest to lead to a richer, more integrated life in the community.

"In my home state of Oregon, all adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities live in the community because we have no institutions. Not one person with a disability has asked that we reopen our large state institutions," said Sara Gelser, National Council on Disability Member and Oregon State Representative. "There is simply no good reason to maintain institutions in the 21st century. They deprive individuals with disabilities of their civil rights while diverting sorely needed resources from essential community based services for people with disabilities."

"Operating large state institutions, which cost three to six times the price tag of inclusive housing is both a fiscal and moral tragedy," said Gary Blumenthal, NCD member. "Strengthening self-direction and community living serves Americans with disabilities and our communities at large. A more inclusive, fiscally sound future requires our state and local communities to use every limited tax dollar in the most effective ways possible. That means continuing the trend to move people with disabilities out of state-run institutions and into their own homes. NCD hopes this toolkit will be useful in facilitating this necessary social and economic shift."

How was "Deinstitutionalization: Unfinished Business" prepared?

In addition to conducting interviews and focus groups, NCD facilitated two case studies in the field: Oregon, which has closed all state institutions, and Georgia, which has just begun the process as part of its Olmstead settlement agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice.

Key findings:

  • The cost to provide services to people in the outdated mode of institutional settings far exceeds the cost to provide services in the community, and research consistently demonstrates that people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) achieve better outcomes in community settings.
  • Ten states and the District of Columbia have no large state institutions and provide care in the community to people with intellectual disabilities and/or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) regardless of the severity of their disabilities.
  • Other states continue to maintain facilities and deliver services in institutions, despite most families' preference for community-based services.

"Deinstitutionalization: Unfinished Business" is dedicated to the memory of Susan M. Daniels, who was an extraordinary leader and advocate for equal opportunity, full participation, and the economic empowerment of people with disabilities worldwide.

The following spokespersons are available for interviews about "Deinstitutionalization: Unfinished Business"

Sara Gelser - Member, National Council on Disability - Ms. Gelser was appointed to NCD in 2010. She serves as State Representative for the citizens of Corvallis and Philomath in the Oregon State House of Representatives. The youngest woman in the Oregon State Legislature, she also serves as Assistant Majority Leader and chairs the House Education Committee. Previously, Ms. Gelser served as the Children with Disabilities and Family Support Coordinator for the Oregon State Department of Human Services. Additionally, she served as a regional coordinator for the Oregon Parent Training and Information Center, where she provided training to parents, educators and administrators about the implementation of special education law. Ms. Gelser is the founder of the FG Syndrome Family Alliance, a non-profit organization serving families and medical professionals dealing with FG Syndrome, a rare developmental disability. Ms. Gelser and her husband Peter have three daughters, Ellie, Nicole, and Maia, and a teenaged son, Sam, who has FG Syndrome.

Gary Blumenthal - Member, National Council on Disability - Mr. Blumenthal was appointed to NCD in 2010. He is the President and CEO for the Association of Developmental Disabilities Providers (ADDP), which aims to promote and ensure the health of the community-based organizations that provide supports and services for individuals with developmental disabilities. He also served as the Executive Director for the Alta California Regional Center, which oversees service delivery for children and adults with developmental disabilities in the Sacramento region. Previously, Mr. Blumenthal was the Wichita Regional Director for the Kansas State Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, CEO for the Florida State Protection and Advocacy Programs for People with Developmental Disabilities, and Director of the President's Committee on Mental Retardation during the Clinton administration. Mr. Blumenthal was also a member of the Kansas State House of Representatives for 11 years. He was an American Government teacher in the Shawnee Mission Public Schools in Overland Park, Kansas for 12 years. Mr. Blumenthal a graduate of the University of Kansas, Lawrence and the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

European Union tightens online gambling controls | The Raw Story

By Agence France-Presse
Tuesday, October 23, 2012 11:05 EDT

?

The European Commission outlined measures on Tuesday to tighten controls on online gambling, a fast-growing, multi-billion-euro industry, to combat fraud, money laundering and rigging of sport fixtures.

?Consumers, but more broadly all citizens, must be adequately protected,? European internal markets commissioner Michel Barnier said.

?Money laundering and fraud must be prevented, sport must be safeguarded against betting-related match-fixing and national rules must comply with EU law,? Barnier said in a statement.

The commission said the European online gaming industry would be worth 13 billion euros ($16.9 billion) by 2015 but alongside regulated sites, there were countless others that were unregulated and often outside of the EU.

Shared regulation was the key for many problems associated with online gambling which crossed state borders, it said.

Among the major issues, the Commission noted the need to protect children and other vulnerable groups and to prevent fraud and money-laundering via online gambling operations.

?A high level of cooperation is needed, in particular to safeguard the integrity of sports,? it added.

Why these sisters are voting 'No' on same-sex marriage ? Politics ...

MEXICO, Maine ? Their deep belief in God and Christian teachings is being boiled down to sound bites by the ?mainstream media,? and they say the ongoing debate over same-sex marriage in Maine is being dominated by those who support the idea.

That?s how Carol Daigle and her sisters, Valerie Litalien and Cindy Terrill, feel about Question 1 on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Deeply devoted to their religions ? Litalien is Catholic; Terrill and Daigle are Baptist ? the sisters sat together in the front pew of Daigle?s church Friday and spoke passionately about their beliefs and fears.

They are coming out publicly to say they oppose same-sex marriage, but they worry they will be cast as being hateful or bigoted.

?If this is the age of tolerance,? Daigle said, ?why aren?t we being heard? We are not threatening to harm anybody. We are not saying you should be in jail for any of this, but what we are saying is this degrades the foundation of the family and society, promotes diseases and dysfunction and tears down the person?s dignity.?

Daigle said she wanted to meet in her church and sit where she could see the cross behind the pulpit. Litalien had a rosary wrapped around one hand. She said she leans on her faith, prays on a regular basis and knows that God meant for men and women to be together in marriage, not same-sex couples.

?When people say they don?t see how it?s wrong, I say to them if you can show me in the Bible where God says it?s right, then I will agree with you,? Terrill said.

The sisters said that as much as they hear that gays and lesbians are discriminated against, it feels now that those who oppose same-sex marriage are the ones being treated with bias. Terrill said she lost a job over her views, and Litalien worries about saying where she lives for fear of retaliation.

?We are now the ones being forced into the shadows,? Daigle said. She said Maine voters decided the issue once when a citizen referendum overturned state legislation legalizing same-sex marriage.

?So, why are we doing this again?? Daigle asked. ?We didn?t bring this to them; they brought it to us. No means no.?

Many simply don?t dare to speak up for fear of being labeled hateful, Daigle said.

?Do you know how much courage it takes to go out in front of people and put up signs not to redefine marriage?? she asked. ?How much courage it takes to put it on the back of your car? You could have your windows broken.?

They know some in the Christian Civic League who have applied for and been granted concealed weapon permits because they faced death threats and other types of harassment.

?I?m not going to say all of them, but there is a radical segment ? just like someone can say it?s radical Muslims, there?s only a section of them ? there?s a radical segment of pro same-sex people that are extremely radical, and they will stop at nothing to get what they want,? Daigle said. ?Those are the ones that are forcing us into the shadows.?

The sisters say they want people to know they don?t hate gay people.

Litalien told a story of how a gay couple she knew helped her find a religious film for her grandson after the child was recovering from an illness that left him near death.

?We love them as a person, but we don?t have to agree with their lifestyle; but we love them as a person,? Litalien said.

She, Terrill and Daigle are among seven siblings including two other sisters and two brothers. They said the whole family was raised going to church. Although they now practice different versions of Christianity, they said they all believe in the same God.

?We are crying foul because anyone who disapproves of the lifestyle is being told they hate (gays and lesbians),? Litalien said. ?We are Christians and we are commanded to love. And my heart breaks for them being encouraged to stay in a harmful lifestyle that degrades the body and corrupts the soul. But we have no right to hate them and no right to tell them what they can and cannot do, but on that same note, we don?t have to accept same-sex marriage as normal and natural.?

Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.

Every 13 minutes, a woman dies from the disease, totaling nearly 40,000 women a year.

The seriousness of breast cancer can?t be understated. Yet according to the University of Florida Academic Health Center?s Breast Center, one of six Centers of Excellence in Florida, death rates from the disease are steadily decreasing. More than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors live in the U.S.

Increased awareness, improved treatments and early detection have been key, and UF is helping attack the disease head-on.

In the community, UF has raised awareness through events such as the Pink Pumpkin Fest held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In the lab, UF researchers launched more than 4,200 clinical research studies in the last four years with vital results.

For instance, studying how women?s genes and the environment affect cancer could lead to new drugs and treatments that prevent and kill the disease, says Lindy Brounley, UF Shands Cancer Center communications director.

Patients can extend long-term survival and cut down tumors through a UF-pioneered autoimmune response induced by radiotherapy. The process vaccinates women against their own cancer.

And UF researchers are leading the world?s first surveillance imaging trial to monitor breast cancer patients at a high risk of cancer spreading to their other organs, Brounley says.

See how else UF has been involved this year:

Looking to the future, UF Academic Health Center researchers are studying how to diagnose breast cancer through minimally invasive procedures and how groups can foster proper prevention behaviors among women.

(AP) ? George McGovern was an unwavering, often unrequited advocate for liberal Democratic causes. He pursued those goals in plainspoken, usually understated, Midwestern style. He was a dedicated, decent man, a devoted Democrat even when the party establishment turned away from him in defeat.

He wasn't good at political gamesmanship. He suffered his worst blunders when he strayed from straight talk in his doomed 1972 presidential campaign. It didn't fit the man and it shook the credibility he treasured.

McGovern was a partisan without the poison that increasingly infected American politics. In his career-long quest for programs to feed the hungry, in the U.S. and worldwide, he worked in partnership with Bob Dole, a former Republican leader of the Senate, where they'd both served.

During his years of political retirement ? he lost his South Dakota Senate seat in 1980 ? McGovern remained active, lecturing, teaching and writing. He even waged a token presidential campaign in 1984. He'd also run briefly for the 1968 nomination after the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

In his 2011 book, "What It Means to Be a Democrat," he summed up his credo:

"Above all, being a Democrat means having compassion for others. ... It means standing up for people who have been kept down ..."

That was the essence of his program during four terms in the House, three in the Senate, and a doomed and crushed presidential campaign in 1972. By the time he was nominated for the White House, McGovern had been marginalized by rivals in his own party, who argued that he was too far left to be elected. That probably was so, but President Richard M. Nixon was the overwhelming favorite against any Democratic challenger.

McGovern got just 37 percent of the vote to Nixon's 61, carrying only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. Embittered, he considered whether to even stay in politics, especially as other Democrats made him a symbol of what ailed them and kept him off their stages. McGovernite became a label for losers. But he went back to the Senate, and within months he could joke ruefully about his landslide loss.

"I opened the doors of the Democratic Party and 20 million people walked out," McGovern later joked of his reform commission, which had broadened the nominating process, driven out the old party bosses and ultimately made the presidential primaries the arenas for choosing nominees of both parties.

There was nothing strident about McGovern; even when his words were harsh, his delivery tended to be bland. As a young man, he had been a warrior, and a heroic one. As a senator, he opposed U.S. involvement in Vietnam from the beginning, in 1963. Arguing in 1970 for legislation to cut U.S. war spending and force troop withdrawal, he offended his colleagues by telling them, "This chamber reeks of blood," vehement words delivered in the matter-of-fact McGovern style. His 1972 presidential campaign proposals included withdrawal from Vietnam, amnesty for draft evaders and steep cuts in the Pentagon budget.

For a time, he also advocated a $1,000 tax grant to every American to replace complex welfare and income support programs, saying the needy could spend it and the wealthy would pay it back in taxes. It came with no numbers, no estimate of the cost, although McGovern claimed, against arithmetic and logic, that it would balance out at zero. He dropped that idea, but the Republicans never did.

That spoke to one of his chronic political problems. He was an idea man, not a manager. Witness the uncontrolled chaos of his nominating convention, dramatized when assorted Democratic interest groups spent so much time talking that McGovern did not get to deliver his own acceptance speech until 2:48 a.m., long after the TV audience had gone to bed.

But one of his best-remembered, and most unfortunate, lines came later ? after his unvetted selection of Sen. Thomas Eagleton of Missouri as his running mate turned into a political disaster with the disclosure that Eagleton twice had undergone electric shock therapy for depression. McGovern said he was "1,000 percent" for Eagleton and wasn't dropping him from the ticket. But he had to. Then he had to shop for a running mate, with five Democrats declining before Sargent Shriver finally said yes.

So if there'd been any doubt about his outcome against Nixon, it was erased before the fall campaign even began. McGovern was frustrated because Nixon stayed at the White House and seldom campaigned at all. McGovern called him the most corrupt president in American history, as The Washington Post published a succession of Watergate disclosures. Nixon just denied it all.

The political pain would ease. More devastating was the death in 1994 of his daughter, Teresa, who had suffered mental illness and alcoholism, and froze to death in a snowbank near a bar where she'd been drinking in Madison, Wis. "You never get over it, I'm sure of that," he said. "You get so you can live with it, that's all." McGovern and his wife Eleanor, who died in 2007, had four daughters and one son.

McGovern wrote a book, "Terry," about his daughter's life struggle, the family impact and his own worry that his political preoccupations had somehow contributed to her troubles. He used the proceeds to open the Teresa McGovern Center in Madison to help others afflicted by addictions.

As a candidate, McGovern had to fend off conservative claims that he was weak on national defense, a naive peacenik ? that he had, according to the far right, shirked combat, which was a lie. He was a decorated World War II pilot with 35 combat missions in B-24 bombers.

It could have been a campaign asset, but he talked little about it. He did in a Labor Day speech: "I still remember the day when we were hit so hard over Germany that we were all ready to bail out. So I gave this order to the crew: 'Resume your stations. We're going to bring this plane home.' I say to you and to people everywhere who share our cause: 'Resume your stations. We're going to bring America home.'"

That last line became the standard closing of his campaign speech. But he didn't repeat the details of the mission that won him the Distinguished Flying Cross for safely landing his crippled B-24. Perhaps he should have said more about his service, he said later, "but I always felt kind of foolish talking about my war record ? what a hero I was."

That he did not was typical George McGovern.

Democratic donors energize "Super PACs" as election nears

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic donors gave unprecedented amounts of money in September to their party's three main "Super PACs," federal disclosures revealed on Friday, a reflection of how wealthy Democrats' reluctance to give to such groups has faded in the weeks before the November 6 election.

A fundraising laggard for much of the campaign, the political action committee (PAC) backing President Barack Obama raised more than a rival group backing Republican Mitt Romney, the second consecutive month the Democratic group has done so.

The pro-Obama group Priorities USA Action raised $15.2 million in September, compared with $14.8 million for the pro-Romney group Restore Our Future, according to new filings with the Federal Election Commission.

Restore Our Future, a formidable advertising force whose attack ads on Romney's Republican rivals helped him secure the party's presidential nomination, began the crucial month of October with $16.6 million in cash on hand.

American Crossroads, a Super PAC run by veteran Republican operative Karl Rove, on Saturday reported raising $11.7 million and kicking off October with $15.8 million in cash on hand.

DONORS GIVE BIG

Republican PACs have invested far more in advertising than Obama's backers, spending $84.1 million since September 10 alone, according to a Reuters analysis of disclosures through October 18. Democratic-aligned groups spent $23.1 million in that time.

Early this year, many Democratic donors were reluctant to donate to PACs supporting their party's candidates because they disliked the idea of contributing to attack ads and other negative advertising - a staple of spending by groups known as "Super PACs" because they have no limits on how much they can raise and spend.

In recent months, fundraising for Democratic PACs has accelerated to counter the waves of anti-Obama and anti-Democratic ads from Republican groups.

Priorities in September received $2 million from founder of Newsweb Corp Fred Eychaner; $1.5 million from billionaire hedge fund manager of Renaissance Technologies Corp James Simons; and $1 million each from film director Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and New York lawyer David Boies Jr, according to filings.

The group had $7.3 million in cash on hand at the end of last month, Saturday's filing showed. Spending nearly three times less than Priorities in September, Restore Our Future started October with $16.6 million.

Restore's biggest donors in September included Texas home builder Bob Perry and billionaire Harold Simmons.

Perry gave $2 million in September and leads all donors with $10 million contributed to Restore Our Future during this election cycle. Simmons gave $500,000 for the month, increasing his total to the group to $1.3 million.

Simmons is also the biggest donor to American Crossroads. The Dallas patron was the group's biggest donor, giving $2.5 million in September. Together with his firm Contran Corp, Simmons has given $15.5 million to the Super PAC.

Its other big September donors included telecommunications conglomerate Armstrong Group of Pennsylvania, which gave $1.3 million, and Jay Bergman of PETCO Petroleum Corp in Illinois, who gave $1 million.

CONTROL OF CONGRESS

The Democratic PACs seeking to help candidates win House of Representatives and Senate seats also saw donations rise in September.

Majority PAC, the group helping Democratic candidates for the Senate, announced on Friday its biggest cash haul since its creation in 2010: $10.4 million in September, and another $9.7 million during the first week of October.

Its sister group, House Majority PAC, also had its best month in September and is on track to double that in October, an aide to the group said.

Democrats need a net gain of 25 seats to become the majority party in the 435-seat House, an outcome that most pollsters see as unlikely. Republicans need a net gain of four seats to take control of the Senate. Most pollsters also see that as unlikely.

Scores of Republican PACs and tax-exempt groups have been formed to support Republican House and Senate candidates. Tax-exempt groups do not disclose their finances.

American Crossroads alone spent $27.9 million on polling and ads, among other things, in September, filings showed.

Republicans showed greater fundraising strength at the party level in September.

The Republican National Committee raised $48.4 million and ended September with $82.6 million in cash on hand. Its Democratic counterpart took out a large loan.

The Democratic National Committee, which has focused on races for the Senate and House, raised $20.3 million in September and borrowed $10.5 million. It ended September $20.5 million in debt, according to its filing with the FEC.

A DNC representative declined to comment on the reason for the debt and how it might affect Democratic candidates in the final two weeks before the election. The party had $4.6 million in cash on hand heading into October.

The RNC reported $9.9 million in debt at the end of September, with its $82.6 million in cash on hand.

Unlike the DNC, the Republican Party has been working closely with its presidential candidate, Romney, who heavily relies on its grassroots operation. On the Democratic side, Obama's campaign has a huge grassroots organization itself and does not need such help from its party.

HBT: Giants season comes down to Zito

Two years ago during the Giants? championship run Barry Zito wasn?t even on the playoff roster, but now he?s starting Game 5 of the NLCS tonight with their season on the line.

The good news is that the Giants have won 12 straight Zito starts dating back to August 7.

The bad news is that win streak included Zito failing to make it out of the third inning against the Reds in the NLDS and his overall ERA in those 12 starts is 4.04. In other words, he hasn?t exactly been the driving force behind the dozen consecutive victories.

It will be Zito?s ninth career playoff start, but he hasn?t thrown more than four innings in a postseason outing since the ALDS in 2006, when he tossed eight innings of one-run ball versus Minnesota. To get a sense of how long ago that was, Frank Thomas was the A?s cleanup hitter and Johan Santana started for the Twins.

If the Giants can win tonight they?ll have Ryan Vogelsong and Matt Cain lined up for Games 6 and 7, but first they?ll need Zito to earn a big chunk of his much-maligned $127 million contract.

Make Money Selling Other People's Products | Business Thrival, Inc.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money online. This is especially true if you don?t have your own products to sell or if you want to add diversity to what you already sell.

As an affiliate marketer, you are given your own unique links to a product so the seller knows when a customer you referred buys their product. The seller then pays you a commission, a percentage of the sale, in return for referring the buyer.

So let?s look at three steps you can use to make money selling other people?s products as an affiliate.

Step 1: Find Products You Want To Sell

The first step in creating your affiliate marketing business is to decide what type of product(s) you want to sell initially.

The easiest way to decide what types of product(s) to sell is by researching some of the hottest trends in the market. You can do this by searching on some of the most popular places on the Internet.

For example, you can use Google?s Keyword Tool. With this tool, you simply type in the different key words that you think people would use to search for a product.
Then Google spits out the data on how many people are searching on that topic each day on Google?s search engine.

The Google Keyword Tool is a great way to figure out what products consumers are looking for. In fact, it?s one of the best free tools that currently exists.

After you have determined the type of products you want to sell, the next step is to find the companies that actually sell those products.

Step 2: Find Companies That Sell The Products You Want To Promote

Many companies have affiliate programs that you can find directly on their web site. So if you found a company that has products you want to promote, you can visit that company?s web site directly and see if they have an ?Affiliate Signup? link.

You can also search online marketplaces. For example, Clickbank is an affiliate marketplace of over 50,000 digital products that allows publishers of digital products to find affiliates who want to promote their products.

Once you find a product you want to promote, you then sign up to become an affiliate of that company so that you can start promoting the product. There are various advertising methods you can use to promote the product, which is the next step.

Step 3: Advertise and Promote Your Affiliate Products

There are a number of ways you can advertise and promote your affiliate products to make money. For example, you can use paid advertising, content marketing, and social media, to name a few.

One way that Denise and I promote other people?s products is through content marketing. This is a great way to get traffic to our affiliate offers.

With content marketing, you basically publish free content through various sites on the internet, and then point people directly to your affiliate listings, or back to your own web site that mentions your affiliate offers.

The goal is to get other people to like your content or comments, and therefore go visit your related page to get more information and hopefully buy the affiliate products that you are promoting.

The better quality of content that you publish, the more people will like you, and the more likely they will be to click on the link that you?ve provided.

For example, our Business Thrival newsletter that you are currently reading is one example of how we earn money through promoting our products and other high quality third party products after we deliver tremendous value through the newsletter content.

There are some cases where you may want to have your own blog that contains articles or product reviews, and then points to one or more affiliate products that you promote.

The benefit to having your own web site that contains your affiliate offers is that you can switch out your affiliate link with a different product any time you want.

However, you will generally get higher sales if you send visitors straight to your affiliate offer from your advertisements than if you send them to your own blog.

If you want more advanced step-by-step instructions on how to make money selling other people?s products, then make sure you?click here to check out the special Affiliate Marketing report that Denise and I created for you..

LONDON (AP) -Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski will be out of action for three months with ruptured ankle ligaments, forcing him to miss his chance of playing with teammate Wojciech Szczesny also injured.

Fabianski, who missed Poland's midweek match against England while recovering from a shoulder injury, ruptured his ankle ligaments in training for Arsenal on Thursday. He saw a specialist the same day, and manager Arsene Wenger says he will need surgery.
