Simplify your Business Life with Simple Productivity Tools ? Lauren ...

Time yourself for efficiency

Time yourself for efficiency

Many people tend not to refer to themselves as minimalists. We simply buy, use, and collect too many things to think otherwise. Yet with all our gadgets, trinkets, and supplies, we usually find the most value in minimalist tools and methods that help increase our productivity.

Despite the appeal of multi-featured products and multitasking, I?ve found that having fewer tasks and options to focus on at a time makes getting things done a whole lot faster and easier. Here we?ll talk about three incredible tools you can use to simplify your business life, home life, and possible even your social life.

They are simple tools that focus your attention on very little at a time, and yet make sure that you excel at the little you set out to do. You?ll be able to accomplish what you need to do first, finally making time to do what you enjoy as well.

Evernote

Evernote has grown significantly since it was launched back in 2008. Reaching more than 11 million users last year, it has easily become one of the most popular productivity tools of our time.
Evernote is an organization tool for iPhones, iPads, and other mobile devices. The application can also run on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and various Internet browsers. On your computer Evernote can copy selected windows on the screen, including web pages if your browser supports it. You can then mark these copies with titles and organize them into notebook, archiving them in a number of ways.

On mobile devices, items you?ve copied can be synced directly to the Evernote cloud service, so you?ll never lose any of the information that you?re organizing. You can also take pictures from your smartphone or tablet and save them directly onto your Evernote account. You can also add GPS tagging and audio comments to each of the pictures you save.

There are hundreds of ways you can use this tool to your advantage. Many companies have switched to Evernote as their central filing system, abandoning physical paperwork altogether. Students use it as a great way to take written notes and keep track of their school work. Families use it as a cheap way to store their photos through a cloud service, versus an unsecure hard drive.
As you begin to use it, you?ll notice other little ways you can be more productive with this tool. For example, let?s say you?re going to a major mall, airport or other commercial area. Before you leave the parking lot, take a picture of your car, GPS tag it, and then you can use the GPS on your mobile device to walk right back to it later.

Evernote can be a valuable productivity tool if used correctly and consistently. Give it a try for a week and see how it works. There?s no downside and its basic service is completely free.

Pomodoro Technique

Developed back in the late 1980s, the Pomodoro technique is an incredible time management system that involves working in short focused waves. The basic idea is to use a timer and work on a single task for 25 minutes without any interruption, and then take a short break for 5 minutes. This takes a lot of pressure off a particular task while discouraging unnecessary multitasking.
The Pomodoro technique allows you to make calculated progress on all of your tasks by encouraging deep concentration without distractions instead of tackling it all at once and feeling overwhelmed. It?s simple, but very effective, and keeps you focused on what?s most important.

Steps:

  • Select a take you need to accomplish today.
  • Set a timer for 25 minutes and begin working on that task.
  • When time is up, take a short 5 minute break.
  • Repeat.

Every 4 cycles, take a 25 minute break.

You?ll notice after trying it that the Pomodoro technique is very easy to remember and follow. It doesn?t require any special software, lists, or other medium. You can practice it with anything.

Zendone

Zendone is complementary software to Evernote. It further explores the organization and productivity features that Evernote offers by creating a task management system for you.
When you connect Zendone to Evernote, you?ll choose one of your Evernote folders as your main task inbox. In the future, anything that you upload to that Evernote folder will also pop up in your Zendone inbox as a task. So with Evernote you have a fantastic way to collect and organize vast amounts of content on one digital interface using text, pictures, and audio recordings.

With Zendone, you can now designate what you want to do with this information and prioritize it in the form of daily tasks. If it?s just information for the file then you can archive it for reference, but if it something you need to get done at a later date, like paying a bill or taxes, then you can title it and organize it as a task in your Zendone inbox.

Try utilizing each of these three productivity tools to your advantage. Collect and store information on Evernote while using Zendone to organize it into tasks. Then use the Pomodoro technique to accomplish those tasks. Rinse and repeat. It?s a simple way to maximize your productivity while lowering your stress. Give it a try and let us know how it worked for you in the comments below.

2013 to bring new hotel, new casino to local gamblers | TribLIVE

A hotel at The Meadows, a casino in Fayette County and new games are on tap for Western Pennsylvania gamblers in 2013.

Regulators will award the license for the state?s 13th casino, as gambling industry leaders hope Americans have enough confidence in the economy to keep the slots spinning and the cards turning.

?We?re a discretionary income business,? Rivers General Manager Craig Clark says of casinos in general. ?We?re one of the first to be cut? when people have to reduce their spending.

In the first 11 months of the year, Pennsylvania casinos generated $2.9 billion in gambling revenue, an increase of 4.7 percent from the total through November 2011. With an eye toward increasing that figure again in 2013, casino executives plan new offerings to attract new players and keep familiar faces returning.

Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin will open in the summer at the Fayette County resort, says Isle of Capri spokeswoman Jill Alexander. Isle of Capri, which operates 15 casinos in six other states, will manage Lady Luck.

It will have 600 slot machines and 28 table games but no poker room, Alexander says. The casino will have 450 employees.

Lady Luck Nemacolin will be a resort casino, meaning it will be open only to hotel guests and to people making a $10 purchase, such as food, a souvenir or a gift card. Managers of existing Western Pennsylvania casinos say they don?t worry about competition specifically from Lady Luck.

?Nemacolin will have some minor effect, but I don?t think it will be dramatic,? says Sean Sullivan, vice president and general manager at The Meadows Racetrack and Casino in North Strabane. ?It?ll be attractive to certain types of players.?

Clark sees Nemacolin as more of a destination location, while most Rivers customers come from Allegheny County.

The Meadows

Officials are ?working tirelessly? on a hotel that will be connected to the casino, Sullivan says. He expects groundbreaking in the spring.

The hotel will have about 200 rooms. Although about 1,000 rooms are available in nearby hotels, Clark says an on-site facility is a ?critical component? for casino guests. ?Meadows Hotel? will be built below the south parking garage, in an area now used for bus parking.

Work also is to start in the spring for a retail development tentatively called ?The Street.? It will front on Racetrack Road and include shops, restaurants and a bank. Tenants might be announced next month.

Rivers

The casino recently remodeled its poker room and installed a new high-limit room.

Clark says Rivers? focus in 2013 will be on slot machines and promotions. The casino plans to add new slots and get new titles out faster. He says promotions will be bigger and more exclusive. The $300,000 ?mortgage mania? promotion in January offers to cover the winner?s mortgage payments for a year, up to $18,000, with secondary prizes of making car and credit card payments.

The casino will continue its emphasis on community involvement, he says. It will again be a partner with the Auto Show and plan a NASCAR event that will put winners in a NASCAR simulator.

?Our business is based in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. We?re supported by the local community in a very significant way,? he says.

Statewide

A major decision for the Gaming Control Board will be awarding the license for a second casino in Philadelphia. Six companies are vying for the state?s last Category 2 license, which allows a stand-alone casino with up to 5,000 slot machines and 250 table games.

Although Pennsylvania appears to have replaced New Jersey as the No. 2 gambling states, it faces competition from expansion in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland and elsewhere.

The state Gaming Control Board will see that the approval process for new games is quick and efficient, a spokesman says. The board also notes that several casinos are adding entertainment and conference venues, hotels and additional restaurants.

Nationwide

Online gambling will remain the No. 1 topic. Supporters of federal legislation authorizing legal online poker pulled the plug on their proposal in mid-December, while pledging to try again in 2013.

A 2011 U.S. Department of Justice ruling says states may offer online games within their borders. Nevada has authorized operators of online poker site that are expected to begin operations this year, and Delaware seems poised to offer online slots as well as poker, roulette, blackjack and other games.

Last week, New Jersey?s Legislature approved allowing online versions of any game offered in Atlantic City casinos. The bill was sent to Gov. Chris Christie.

California and other states are exploring legalization of online gambling.

Russian Adoption Ban Breaks Hearts Of Bay Area Families

Russia was poised Thursday to break the hearts of some Bay Area families and others nationwide awaiting the arrival of orphaned Russian children they have met and chosen to adopt.

In a brusque move aimed at rebuking American foreign policy, the Russian Parliament on Wednesday approved an immediate U.S. adoption ban, and President Vladimir Putin said he is likely to sign it.

"Everybody's devastated," said Janet Shirley of Bay Area Adoption Services in Mountain View.

Among those petitioning to stop the ban is 18-year-old Anastasia Helberg, whose life brightened when she moved to California from a crowded Russian orphanage seven years ago.

Putin "is not thinking about these kids," she said. "It's really sad that these kids are stuck there and have no chance to come over here and live a normal life with a family."

American families have welcomed more than 60,000 Russian children into their homes since 1992, including nearly 1,000 last year, but an escalating diplomatic dispute threatened a sudden end to the exchange.

About 740,000 Russian children live without their parents, most of them in state-run institutions, according to the United Nations Children's Fund, which on Thursday urged the Russian government to "let the best interests of children" determine its policies.

One California family working with a Pleasant Hill adoption service is in Russia now with a newly adopted child, hoping to fly out before the ban takes effect. Two other families have bonded with their children and are waiting for a hearing in Russian adoption courts, so the children are not yet legally theirs.

Several other Bay Area families are in some stage of adopting but declined to speak publicly, fearing that the exposure could damage their chances.

The Russian bill calls for the ban to take effect Tuesday, though adoption agencies hope Putin, if he enacts it, abides by an agreement that requires a yearlong delay.

Russian lawmakers are using the ban to retaliate against new American travel and financial sanctions targeting Russians accused of human rights violations. The controversy also reflects deeper Russian concerns about losing children to foreigners, especially amid several well publicized cases of American abuse and neglect.

Russia was the third most popular country for U.S. adoptions in 2011 after China and Ethiopia, despite an increasingly laborious and costly process that requires prospective American parents to visit the country three times to bond with the child, attend a court hearing and undergo a battery of background checks.

"Russian adoptions are probably -- on a scale of zero to 10 -- they're 9.5 in difficulty," Shirley said. "Parents who adopt from Russia are very dedicated."

Some white couples or Russian-Americans look to the country for children who share their fair complexion or cultural ties; single mothers choose to adopt there because Russia, unlike many countries, doesn't require married parents; and parents desiring to adopt children as young as 12 months also find more options in Russia, adoption coordinators said.

Amid domestic protests over the proposed ban, Russian leaders promised Thursday to improve the lives of abandoned Russian children and those with medical conditions so that they don't have to leave. Legislators have pledged to clean up the nation's shabby patchwork of more than 2,000 orphanages and encourage more domestic adoptions and foster care. Those who have found homes with loving American families remain skeptical.

Now a high school senior living with her adoptive parents in Lafayette, Helberg grew up bunking with other orphaned girls in the rust-belt Russian city of Yoshkar-Ola some 500 miles east of Moscow.

Many abandoned children who aged out of her orphanage fell into street crime or prostitution, she said.

"I know that I would have not been in a good place if I were still in Russia," she said. "I would not have the things I have today. No family, and no money."

The Russian consulate in San Francisco declined to discuss the proposed ban "because it hasn't been passed yet," said consular spokesman Yevgeny Avdoshian. "We don't comment on the work of the legislative branch."

U.S. diplomats, however, voiced "deep concerns" over the Russian government's maneuvers. ___

India gang-rape victim dies in hospital

The 23-year-old who was gang-raped in New Delhi and thrown from a bus has died from her injuries in Singapore, where she was being treated. NBC's Natalie Morales reports.

By NBC News and wire services

SINGAPORE ? A 23-year-old Indian woman who was gang-raped and severely beaten on a bus in New Delhi died Saturday at a Singapore hospital.

The woman's horrific ordeal galvanized Indians to demand greater protections against widespread sexual violence, and her death was expected to intensify public demands for action by the Indian government.

The victim who has not been identified,?"passed away peacefully" with her family and officials of the Indian embassy by her side," said Kelvin Loh, the chief executive of Mount Elizabeth Hospital, where she had been treated since Thursday. "The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss," he said in a statement.

The woman and a male friend were traveling in a public bus after watching a film on the evening of Dec. 16 when they were attacked by six men who took turns raping her. They also beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into her body resulting in severe organ damage. Both of them were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

?

The woman was airlifted to Singapore on Dec. 26 for specialist treatment, but she had remained in extremely critical condition, Loh said.

The victim had already undergone three abdominal operations before arriving in Singapore, where her condition on Thursday was described as "extremely critical."

Photos: Police try to temper outrage over gang rape

"Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth Hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days," said Loh on Saturday. "She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."

Protesters call for execution

The attack triggered nationwide protest?over the lack of safety for women, culminating last weekend in pitched battles between police and protesters in the heart of the capital.

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government seemed at first caught off guard by the reaction to the attack, which sparked a blame game between politicians and the police.

On Saturday he said that he was aware of the emotions the attack has stirred and that it was up to all Indians to ensure that the young woman's death will not have been in vain.

"These are perfectly understandable reactions from a young India and an India that genuinely desires change," Singh said in a statement. "It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action."

He said the government was examining the penalties for crimes such as rape "to enhance the safety and security of women."

Indian television channels said security had been tightened in New Delhi on Saturday in anticipation of more protests following the woman's death.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Protests continued across New Delhi, India, where around 500 people marched in response to the recent gang rape of a young woman. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

In The Corpse Of 2012, The Fungal Seedpods Of 2013 Bloom Bright ...

The years pass like ships in the night. One pulling into harbor. The other drifting out to sea.

Of course, the way time is, 2012 will drift out to sea and hit the carcass of a frozen whale. It?ll punch a hole in the hull. Then the USS 2012 will take on slushy water and begin to sink. Its inhabitants will drop into the churn where they will all be summarily consumed by ICE SHARKS.

Point is, 2012 will soon be gone.

And 2013 will take its place.

Which means ? time for the requisite?looking backward to look forward post!

Truth is, 2012 has been one helluva year.

This is the year I really?became that thing I always really wanted to be: a dude who gets to write novels for a living (aka, ?a novelist,? or ?an author,? or, ?that bearded, pantsless recluse?). I?ve been a professional writer for, sheesh, almost 15 years now, and many of those years were spent as a full-time freelance writer. But this is the first year I can feel 100% comfortable tacking on ?novelist? to the ol? resume.?And to do it full-time? To support my family?

    Holy fucking wow.

    This year alone, I published:

Blackbirds: in which snarky damaged psychic Miriam Black can see how you?re gonna die.

Mockingbird: AKA the continuing adventures of that snarky, angry psychic, Miriam Black.

Dinocalypse Now: two-fisted pulp featuring heroes, apes, Neanderthals, psychic dinosaurs.

Bait Dog: teen detective/vigilante Atlanta Burns solves a murder by way of a dog-fighting ring.

Bad Blood: an e-novella featuring the return of Coburn, a vampire in Zombieland.

Plus, got to help put together the supremely bad-ass?Don?t Read This Book collection for Evil Hat, featuring some incredibly potent writer-fu.

The Miriam Black series really got a lot of attention and so far has sold well beyond my expectations. Then both?Dinocalypse Now and?Bait Dog?were the product of two kickass Kickstarters that proved to me what a valuable asset crowdfunding will be to the creatives of the future (sorry: THE FUTURE; sounds better when you caps lock that shit).

Plus, 2012 is a year where I signed on for bevy of new books. Some already written.

    I?ve got:

The Blue Blazes: In which criminal Underworld meets the mythic one.

The Cormorant: Miriam Black is back with a face full of murder and Mommy Issues.

Heartland, Book One: My ?cornpunk? YA adventure novel (new title soon announced).

Heartland, Books Two & Three:?THE CORNPUNK CONTINUES.

Gods & Monsters: Unclean Spirits: The gods are in exile on Earth! Hijinks ensue!

Beyond Dinocalypse:?Our heroes trapped in a pulp-sodden psychosaur dystopia.

Dinocalypse Forever:?Our heroes must travel to where ? er, when ? the psychosaurs began!

Harum Scarum: Atlanta Burns in, ?Fear and Loathing in Dark Pennsyltucky.?

Holy hell, that?s a lot of books.

(Also: holy hell, it means my 2013 is going to be at near-psychotic levels of busy-ness.)

But, of course, it isn?t all about the books.

This site,?terribleminds, is still going strong as an ox on bath salts ? 2010 I had 438,000 views, 2011 saw that number jump to 1,474,000, and 2012 saw that number jump again to 2,650,000. (I mean, it?s no Scalzi?s Whatever, but whatever.) Plus, I got to do a redesign and get most of what I wanted out of it ? all for a handful of stress-tangled man-hours and $45.00. I?m very happy with it and my hope is that you readers are, as well.

This year I also got to release both 500 More Ways To Be A Better Writer and 500 Ways To Tell A Better Story?and both seemed to land well ? particularly the latter, which contains a bunch of stuff I think really clicks. The writing books continue to sell nicely, many of them hopping in and out of the Top 20 books on writing at Amazon.

Life progresses. It progresses in a way I can find little fault with ? it?s been a hard year for the world, I know, but honestly, I?ve been really fortunate on a personal level. I hate to use the term ?blessed,? because I?ve no idea who is doing the blessing (Jesus? Shiva? The Large Hadron Collider?), and I also like to think I?ve earned some of the fortune, but there?s no denying that life and luck have been kind to me even when I?ve had no hand in it.

    We got a new puppy.

I went to WorldCon, met a bunch of great people ? a list of names too endless to recount, but c?mon, Adam Christopher, Gwenda Bond, Laura Lam, Kim Curran, Mike Underwood, Saladin Ahmed, Myke Cole, LA Gilman, Elizabeth Bear, Mur Lafferty, Ramez Naam, Wes Chu, Seanan McGuire, so many inspiring minds that really put more coal in the creative furnace. Plus, I reconnected with an old friend while there. FTMFW.

I spoke at the very lovely and highly-recommended Crossroads Conference in Macon, Georgia. (Macon?s tagline is, ?It?s Hotter Here,? which I thought was trademarked for Hell, but apparently Macon snatched it up first.) New friendships made: Delilah (aka ?Derlerlah?) Dawson, Jeremy Foshee, Chris Horne, Paul Barrett, Matt Jackson.

I also got to speak at both Storyworld and Writer?s Digest West in Los Angeles. Read at Noir at the Bar with a handful of talented blokes. Got to meet JC Hutchins, Johnny Shaw, Eric Beetner, Greg Bardsley, Caitlin Burns, Jay Bushman, again another endless list of talented humans. (And I was in LA in April, too, for the?Blackbirds launch, where I got to finally meet Sabrina Ogden and Priscilla Spencer! Seriously, I know some of the most awesomest people.)

And 2013 promises some new and interesting things, too ? something-something film stuff, something-something international travel, something-something new writing book (with physical copies!), something-something doom-laser robot that will destroy the Eastern Seaboard with a transmedia boombox made of human corpses.

    You know. THE USUAL.

Thanks to all you crazy kids for hanging around here and listening to me rant. Hope you see fit to keep coming back in the new year, to keep reading my bloggerel, and maybe checking out my books, too. I only get to do what I do because of you fine people out there in Internetsville (aka ?Pornopolis?). We creators are only as good as the audience that carries us, as the friends who support us, as the family members who love us.

    Oh, and speaking of family:

Ben Affleck won't run for U.S. Senate in Mass.

BOSTON (AP) ? Ben Affleck is taking his name off the list of possible candidates for U.S. Sen. John Kerry's seat, which would be open if the Democratic senator from Massachusetts is confirmed as secretary of state.

Affleck says in a Monday posting on his Facebook page that while he loves the political process, he will not be running for public office.

Speculation about the Cambridge, Mass., native rose slightly when he did not completely rule out a Senate bid during an appearance on CBS' Face The Nation on Sunday.

In his Facebook posting, Affleck says he would continue working with the Eastern Congo Initiative, a nonprofit organization that helps direct humanitarian aid to the war-torn region, and for other causes.

Affleck says Kerry would make a great secretary of state.

Warm glow of Berlin's gas streetlights set to fade

Most of Berlin's gaslights, those distinctive street jewels that have spread a gentle golden glow for more than a century-and-a-half, are set to be removed. NBC's Andy Eckardt reports

    By Peter Jeary, NBC News

BERLIN - As a capital city, Berlin has endured more than its fair share of division over the years.?Now new battle lines are being drawn over what some see as a fight for the city's character.

The conflict began when City Hall announced?its intention to phase out the vast majority of Berlin's historic gas lamps?as?part of an ambitious project to make the city carbon-neutral by 2050.

With nearly 43,000 gas-powered streetlights, Berlin has more than any other city in the world. In fact, more than one in six in the city are gas.

Some date back to the 19th century; others were erected immediately after World War II as the occupying Soviet forces made restoring light to the devastated city a priority.

In recent years, guided tours have been run to picturesque areas, with sightseers attracted by the?distinctive warm, yellowish glow of gas lamps.

    Pete Jeary/NBC News

With nearly 43,000 gas-powered street lamps, Berlin has more than any other town or city in the world.

    Pollution, expense
Think Beacon Hill in Boston or San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter - but on a much larger scale - and cue the outrage.

But with annual running costs for fuel and maintenance as much as $700 for some lamp models, and carbon dioxide emissions almost ten times that of an equivalent electric light, there are now strong financial and environmental incentives to replace gas with electric alternatives.

The city's current modernization program?(link in German) will see 8,000 highway lamps, mostly dating from the early 1950s, replaced with new electric lights.

City authorities say the figures speak for themselves.

?The energy used by those 8,000 gas lamps could power 100,000 electric lights.?And replacing them would cut energy costs by 90 percent, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 9,200 tons per year and save a chunk of the $1.6 million spent each year just on replacement gas mantles.

    Pete Jeary/NBC News

Annual running costs for a gas-powered lamp can be as much as $700, and CO2 emissions almost ten times that of an equivalent electric light.

Read more about Germany from NBC News

Petra Rohland, spokeswoman for Berlin's Department of Urban Development, said the current refit would be complete by end of 2016 - and would recoup the cost within nine years.

All but a few of the city's gas-powered lamps will eventually go.

"Five percent of the historic gas lights, especially the candelabra, will be kept as originals in the future," Rohland said.

    'Knock down the Brandenburg Gate'
It's a future that fills some Berliners like Paul Harrison with dread.

Harrison is a member of a growing band of preservation societies?who oppose the wholesale replacement of gas lights.

He challenges the environmental and financial arguments put forward by the city to justify the changes.

Futuristic highway glows in the dark, reports the weather?

"If we're just talking about saving money, we could knock down the Brandenburg Gate," he said ironically. "After all, that costs a lot to keep going, to keep clean."

Harrison's group, Gaslight Culture, is calling for the dismantling to be suspended - and for talks between all interested parties.

New bulb ushers in 100-watt-like LED light

"We haven't started to explore the possibilities, such as different forms of financing or even sponsorship of streets or districts," he said.

Harrison deplored what he described as ?the rejection of a working system.??And the replacement LEDs would be ?prohibitively expensive? and ?far from convincing? as alternatives.

    'A living light'
Such rejection of new technology would be a disappointment to Andre Braun, who has spent years developing LED illumination that?mimics the color of gas light?(in German).

For Braun, whose workshop is on the same site as the former Berlin gas plant where his father once worked, the search for the perfect replacement is nothing short of a crusade.

Glowing plastic lets you make light bulbs in any shape

The way he talks about working with gas is reminiscent of how a fisherman might talk of the sea.

"It's so very difficult to work with," Braun said. "The extremes of temperature make it a constant battle ... unlike electricity, which is a dead light, gas gives a living light. But that's tough to recreate in an LED."

"Some people think I'm crazy to spend all this time trying to replicate the look of the gas lamp," he said. "But they are beautiful; gas lights have no glare, you can look right into them."

Netflix suffers Christmas Eve outage, points to Amazon

    10 hrs.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An outage at one of Amazon's Web service centers hit users of Netflix Inc.'s streaming video service on Christmas Eve and was not fully resolved until Christmas day, a spokesman for the movie rental company said on Tuesday.?

The outage impacted Netflix subscribers across Canada, Latin America and the United States, and affected various devices that enable users to stream movies and television shows from home, Netflix spokesman Joris Evers said. Such devices range from gaming consoles such as Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 to Blu-ray players.?

Evers said that the issue was the result of an outage at an Amazon Web Services' cloud computing center in Virginia, and started at about 12:30 p.m. PST (2030 GMT) on Monday and was fully restored Tuesday morning, although streaming was available for most users late on Monday.?

"We are investigating exactly what happened and how it could have been prevented," Evers said.?

"We are happy that people opening gifts of Netflix or Netflix-capable devices can watch TV shows and movies and apologize for any inconvenience caused last night," he added.

An outage at Amazon Web Services, or AWS, knocked out such sites as Reddit and Foursquare in April of last year.?

Amazon Web Services was not immediately available for comment. Evers, the Netflix spokesman, declined to comment on the company's contracts with Amazon.

Auto Insurance Selection Tips For Your Family | LoansTop20.com

Auto insurance is vital for all drivers. With an action plan in place, finding the best plan at the most affordable cost can be accomplished. The tips in this article will help you find the insurance you need to protect yourself.

There are lots of factors that determine the rates you will pay for car insurance. Some of these factors are demographic in nature, such as your age, gender and marital status. You?ll know the best rates if you know how your set of factors will affect the price.

Be aware of the different varieties of insurance coverage, and be sure your policy is complete. You will need liability both if you injure someone or damage their property and a coverage of the damage to your car and of any medical payments. You will also want to consider the need to insure against damages caused by uninsured drivers. Collision insurance and comprehensive insurance are the options that will provide coverage for damages to your own vehicle.

Generally, the largest percentage of accidents happen mid-day by elderly drivers. This affects auto insurance rates as well as one?s ability to secure coverage.

Your insurance premiums will go down if you have a better FICO credit score. You may not have been aware of this, but insurance companies do check your credit. The industry findings have shown that people with lower credit scores often have worse driving habits than those with higher to normal credit scores. Keep your insurance rates low by maintaining a respectable credit score.

If your insurance rate is high because of your imperfect driving record, there are several ways to lower it. If you complete a driving course after getting into an accident, you can usually get a reduction on your rate. Some companies will install monitoring equipment into your car that measures your driving habits. If you demonstrate that you are a responsible driver, your rates may be reduced.

You may be able to find lower insurance premiums by relocating to another city or state. The thinking behind this is that different localities have different laws and demographics, thus different premiums. Therefore, auto insurance may be cheaper if you move to a different city or state.

If you are thinking of adding a teenager to your auto insurance, find out how much it would cost to put them on your policy, versus the amount it would cost to get them a separate policy. Sometimes, getting your teenager their own policy might be less expensive.

You need to understand the ins and outs of your policy and make sure that you are properly covered. There are a number of standard automobile insurance coverages, like medical expenses and bodily injury. Coverages such as comprehensive or collision may not be included on your insurance policy, unless you ask for them. State minimum coverage won?t cover certain types of incidents, so make sure you have the coverage you need.

If you increase your deductibles, you can save money. Even though this can be risky, it can be an excellent method of saving if you can make the initiative to put some money aside, so that you can pay the deductible in case of an accident. Generally, higher deductibles mean lower premium costs.

Insurance companies like documentation, so make sure you have this if you have an accident. Be ready to use your cell phone to snap a picture of an accident scene in case you later have to provide proof to your to your insurance company. It pays to always have a camera on hand in your vehicle.

Ask for a list of discounts that are available through your current insurance policy. You should note every discount that might apply to you. You?ll want to get the best rate possible.

The state?s website should have customer complaint statistics for most of the insurance companies in your state. This number reveals the percentage of complaints for a given provider.

Be sure to consider the cost of insurance when buying a car. Auto insurance companies give you a better rate for cars that are newer and equipped with more safety features. Sports cars are notorious for high insurance premiums. Figure out how much those insurance costs will be and take that into account when choosing which vehicle to buy.

Do no drive if you do not have car insurance. If you are in an accident, good auto insurance will protect you from a big financial hit. These tips are designed to guide you to the right insurance plan for your automobile needs.

You can ask someone to help you with cleaning or cooking if you really need to do it.

You could reduce the dangers by choosing the right doctor, understanding the process, talking to your physician regarding your objectives, coming up with expectations that are realistic and following the instructions of your surgeon carefully.

How To Effectively Plan In Remodeling Your Home - Blog for Energy ...

Projects to improve your home don?t have to cause you a headache! It?s easy to keep a home improvement project free of problems, under budget, and on schedule with just a little bit of flexibility and advanced planning. Continue reading and learn some simple tips and tricks that can help ensure that your next project runs smoothly.

Make sure those cabinets are securely screwed to stud in the wall. You should mark every stud before you begin the project. You can find a stud finder that doesn?t cost much at a hardware store.

If you want to get rid of a popcorn ceiling, have a professional test it for asbestos first. Asbestos needs special care when removing and disposing of it, as it is a dangerous substance; the only time there is a problem, however, is if it is disturbed. If you find out that your ceiling contains asbestos, you might have to have the ceiling professionally removed by a crew with the proper safety equipment.

Instead of just rushing into a home improvement project, think about whether the project will pay for itself. It is smart to get a good return on the investment you make, especially when doing home improvement projects. Don?t make the mistake of thinking that the return on all home improvement projects is similar. Do your research and find out what projects will increase the value the most.

Pay attention to safety rules when you begin a home improvement project. If working in your kitchen or anywhere else where gas may be present, turn off the gas for the duration. Doing construction work near gas might be hazardous! Be sure you are aware of the shutoff valve and where it is! As well, learn the locations of your gas lines, so you are less likely to hit one accidentally.

Never buy built-in furnishings if you aren?t sure how long you?ll be in your home. While this kind of furniture can look great and allow for a lot of storage space, it?s pricey and you can?t take it along if you move.

Put a shot into that vinyl flooring bubble. Simply cut a small slit in the bubble to release the air pocket. However, this will only flatten the bubble temporarily. You?ll have to put glue in place to hold it flat, though. A glue-filled syringe will make the job easy.

The clear and accurate establishment of a budget is crucial for the success of your home improvement project. This requires a list of all materials required for the job and their cost, including a buffer amount of money that will cover unforeseen expenses caused by materials being damaged or broken in the process of performing the home improvement. Buying materials in bulk can save quite a bit of money. A lot of equipment and materials that have to do with renovations usually possess long lead times. Your whole project can be delayed by not ordering them in advance.

Dealing with home improvement projects efficiently is a great goal. You will find that there will come a time when repairs and upgrades are needed. Home improvements not only increase the resell value of your house, but also make it a more pleasant place to live. In addition, it makes your neighbors happy. Continue learning more about home improvements and you can live in your dream home, too.

I have been an environmental enthusiast for quite a few years. I?m especially serious about just how energy saving light bulbs could play a role to improving the ecosystem. The smallest carbon dioxide footprint may be accomplished by using LED bulbs and lots of individuals are right now changing halogen light bulbs to get LED MR16 as well as LED GU10 lamps.

Newtown celebrates Christmas amid signs of mourning

NEWTOWN, Conn. - Newtown celebrated Christmas amid piles of snow-covered teddy bears and heaps of flowers as volunteers manned a 24-hour candlelight vigil in memory of the 20 children and six adults shot to death in the second-largest school shooting in U.S. history.

Well-wishers from around the country showed up Tuesday morning to hang ornaments on memorial Christmas trees, while police officers from around Connecticut took extra shifts to give local police a day off.

"It's a nice thing that they can use us this way," Ted Latiak, a police detective from Greenwich, Connecticut, said as he and a fellow detective came out of a store with bagels and coffee for other officers.

A steady stream of residents, some in pyjamas, relit candles that had been extinguished in an overnight snowstorm. Others dropped off toys and fought back tears at a huge sidewalk memorial filled with stuffed animals, poems, flowers, posters and cards.

In the morning, resident Joanne Brunetti watched over 26 candles that had been lit at midnight in honour of those slain at Sandy Hook Elementary School. She and her husband, Bill, signed up for a three-hour shift and erected a tent to ensure that the flames never went out throughout the day.

"You have to do something and you don't know what to do, you know? You really feel very helpless in this situation," she said. "My thought is if we were all this nice to each other all the time maybe things like this wouldn't happen."

Julian Revie played "Silent Night" on a piano on the sidewalk at the downtown memorial. Revie, from Ottawa, Canada, was visiting the area at the time of the shootings. He found a piano online and chose to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day playing for the people of Newtown.

"It was such a mood of respectful silence," said Revie. "But yesterday being Christmas Eve and today being Christmas Day, I thought now it's time for some Christmas carols for the children."

At a town hall memorial, Faith Leonard waved to people driving by and handed out Christmas cookies and children's gifts. She had driven from Arizona, at almost the other end of the country, to volunteer on Christmas morning alone.

"I guess my thought was if I could be here helping out, maybe one person would be able to spend more time with their family or grieve in the way they needed to," Leonard said.

Many residents attended Christmas Eve services and spent Tuesday morning at home with their families. Others attended church services in search of a new beginning.

At St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, which eight of the child victims of the massacre attended, the pastor told parishioners that "today is the day we begin everything all over again."

Recalling the events of Dec. 14, the Rev. Robert Weiss said: "The moment the first responder broke through the doors, we knew good always overcomes evil."

"We know Christmas in a way we never ever thought we would know it," Weiss said. "We need a little Christmas and we've been given it."

Police have yet to offer a theory about a possible motive for gunman Adam Lanza's rampage. The 20-year-old resident killed his mother in her bed before carrying out the massacre and killing himself.

Mountaintop Rallies Around Fire Victims | WNEP.com ? Scranton ...

Posted on: 10:53 pm, December 23, 2012, by Dave Bohman, updated on: 10:56pm, December 23, 2012

A community in Luzerne County Sunday night rallied around a Mountaintop family whose home burned down two weeks ago.

At the party, Jack and Amy Gentilesco, and their five children aged 14-22, were the guests of honor.

?I think it may be the nicest holiday we`ve ever had,? said Amy, doubting she?d have said something like that two weeks ago.

The Gentilesco`s home in Mountaintop burned to the ground in a spectacular fire.

No one was hurt, but the family lost everything inside.

?It`s just a terrible thing to happen to such a wonderful family,? said Kara Maloney, a friend of the Gentilesco?s oldest daughters.

Their friends had to do something to help their friends who lost so much.

?Our house burned down years ago,? said family friend Gary Buczynski.? ?I know what they`re going through.?

That?s why friends put together a pre-Christmas party at the ?Touch of Class Palace.?? The money raised will help the Gentilescos rebuild.

?It?s bad they lost a lot of mementos, things like that.? The house will be rebuilt, and they will get through it,? said Gary Buczynski.

?We`re lucky to be here to celebrate,? added Amy Gentilesco.? ?We`re lucky that we`re in this community.?

    Lucky on many levels.

Their family?s helpless feelings of watching fire destroy their home passed quickly.

Two days after the fire, something far worse happened with the murder of 26 young students and teachers at a Connecticut elementary school.

That?s why the Gentilescos see their situation as a setback, not a tragedy.

?And we know that our kids are here, with us, and everything is going to be just fine,? Amy said.

The Gentilescos are staying with relatives for the holidays, and plan to rebuild their home in Mountaintop.

Hawaii part of national debt relief fees settlement | Hawaii 24/7

    MEDIA RELEASE

The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) through the Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) announced that it has partnered with the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and four other states in the CFPB?s first joint enforcement action against a nationwide debt-relief services company that illegally charged advance fees for its services.

A federal district court in Miami has issued an order at the request of the CFPB and the five states requiring that Payday Loan Debt Solutions, Inc. (PLDS) refund up to $100,000 to consumers who were unlawfully charged advance fees for debt-settlement services.

The court also granted an injunction barring PLDS and its president, Sanjeet Parvani, from engaging in unlawful conduct in the future.

PLDS allegedly contacted Hawaii residents through the Internet offering to reduce or eliminate payday loans owed by Hawaii residents and then charged them upfront fees before settling their loans.

?This case reaffirms that for-profit companies are barred from conducting debt-adjusting or debt-settlement services under Hawaii law. Generally, only nonprofit credit-counseling companies or attorneys licensed to practice law in Hawaii can perform such services,? OCP Executive Director Bruce Kim said.

If Hawaii residents made advance payments to this company, OCP recommends that they contact PLDS immediately and request a refund of any outstanding balances believed to be in their accounts.

?Everyone is urged to use extreme caution if contacted online, by telephone or through the mail by anyone offering to settle, compromise or reduce your debts. Residents are also reminded that it is generally illegal under federal law for anyone to charge an up-front fee before attempting to settle your debts,? Kim said.

OCP is pleased to join CFPB Director Richard Cordray and the CFPB in the first joint enforcement action between the CFPB and the states. The Office of Consumer Protection looks forward to working together with the CFPB in future consumer protection cases of mutual interest.

Hawaii was represented by Lisa Tong, a senior staff attorney in the Office of Consumer Protection.
