Electricity Line Worker 'Rodeo' Coming Soon to Big Island | Hawaii ...

(Kona, Hawaii): The first Hawaii Lineman?s Rodeo is less than two weeks off. Linemen (and women) who construct and maintain electric utility overhead poles and wires and underground cables will be in friendly competition to show skills, safety and education in overhead electric work. The 37 teams of three experienced line workers and 30 apprentices will compete in a ?hurt man? rescue, pole climbing and other simulated challenges these trained professionals may face.

The free event will be 8 AM to 2 PM, Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island.

Residents and visitors are invited to watch the competition and enjoy a day of family fun at a community fair. In the spirit of helping others, those who wish are encouraged to bring donations to benefit the Big Island Food Basket and Toys for Tots. Non-perishable foods and new toys will be collected at the Kids Zone.

Entertainers include Keoni Atkinson Hula Halau, Merahi Tahitian Dancers, Cameron Hart, Mele?uhane, Nui and the Boys, and Hamana, plus pageant queens. Nearly 20 food and craft vendors will round out the community fair.

HELCO contractors have installed fences and erected 75 utility poles for the 140 competitors. Once the competition has ended, poles will be donated to the Hawaii Island Department of Parks and Recreation to enhance the park as it is returned to its original condition. The park will remain open during the February 23 event.

With 37 teams, 20 apprentices, 84 judges, many sponsors and industry vendors participating, Hawaii Island will benefit with additional visitors to our hotels, restaurants and businesses as well as promotion of Hawaii Island as a premier visitor destination. The cost of the event will be covered by sponsorships and participant fees at no cost to HELCO customers.
